    It is because of the nature of a carbon atom of being able to be bonded chemically to four other atoms.

    Carbon is also able to form long chains of itself. The long chains are not only limited to a straight chain
    formation, but it can also form complex branching. This makes the number of different molecule
    formation to have no limit. The same bonds, with geometrical alterations within the molecule, produces
    a different molecular shape, therefore with different properties.
