Story
“Once Upon A Time”
Nadine Gordimer

Q1: What purpose does the opening of the story serve?

Ans: The opening of the story is very unexpected and uncommon, because it
starts with the writer refusal of writing a story for children. She feels and have a
scenario that she should be free to express her thoughts and desires by her own.
Not by what the people ask or expect from her to write. Also, the start of the
story is also so curious.
The two opening of the story is to inform the readers that it is not going to be a
Disney fairytale as what they expect from the title. Although she is intending to
create a different kind of fairytale. She wants to come out from the old
conventions and want to create something unique. As we can see from the
characters and the scenes. Gordimer writes a story that is threatening and
discomposed which is very opposite of a fairytale.
The opening of the story therefore suggests a distinctive approach of telling a
story to the children.
