TITLE: AN INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN ECONOMY AND J&K
ECONOMY
COURSE CODE : 0ECOGENE05 CREDITS : 5+1
DURATION OF EXAMINATION TOTAL: 150 Marks
MINOR TEST : 01 Hour MINOR TEST: 30 Marks
MAJOR TEST : 03 Hours MAJOR TEST: 120 Marks

OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of this course on Indian Economy is to enable students to have an understanding of
the various issues/components of the Indian Economy so that they are able to comprehend and
critically appraise current Indian economic problems. For this, it is essential to have a good deal
of understanding about the major developments in the Indian economy since independence. Last
unit is devoted to Jammu & Kashmir. The contents of the different units have been accordingly
devised.

UNIT I: Structure of Indian Economy and planning (18 HOURS)


Basic characteristics of Indian economy as a mixed economy and as a planned developing
economy; National Planning Commission and the National Development Council; Planning in
India since 1951: main objectives, broad achievements and failures; NITI Aayog: Aims and
Objectives .

UNIT II: Broad demographic features (18 HOURS)


Broad demographic features- Population size and growth rate, sex composition, rural-urban
composition and occupational distribution; Problem of overpopulation; Population policy of
2000.

UNIT III: Economic Problems (18 HOURS)


Concept of Poverty and Poverty line; Absolute and Relative poverty; Planning Commission’s
estimates of poverty; Economic reforms and poverty eradication programmes; Problem of
unemployment – nature and types; Causes and remedial measures to reduce unemployment.

UNIT IV: Agriculture and Industrial Development in India (18 HOURS)

Agriculture: Importance of agriculture in India; Causes of low productivity in India; New


Agricultural Strategy- meaning, features, achievements, weaknesses and suggestions.
Industry: Role of Industry in economic development of India; Industrial Policy of 1991.

UNIT V: Introduction to J&K economy: (18 HOURS)


Introduction: Physical features; Agricultural Development and working of New Agricultural
Strategies; Industrial Developments in J&K; Tourism-role, problems and suggestions.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER SETTERS AND CANDIDATES:


Minor Test:

1) The Minor Test shall be held for the first 20% of the syllabus having 30 marks i.e.
covering first unit out of five units.
2) It will comprise of three long answer type questions of 8 marks each and students will
have to attempt any two and 10 short answer type questions of 2 marks each and student
will have to attempt any 7 questions.

Major Test: It will be of two parts

1) Part A: It will comprise of 5 questions of 3 marks and 9 questions of 1 mark. (Short


answer/objective type question of 24 marks) covering all five units with equal weightage
to all units.
2) Part B: Comprising of eight long answer questions of 24 marks each, from 2nd, 3rd, 4th
and 5th units. Two questions shall be set from each unit and student will have the internal
choice.
Each question of 24 marks will have two parts:
i) Long answer question of 18 marks.
ii) Short answer question/numerical of 6 marks.
