LAC 002: HOW TO ESTABLISH DISRUPTION FREE CLASS?

PREPARED BY: EMERSON O. SABADLAB & ANESIA P. GUIEB

INTRODUCTION: Education in the Philippines is quite challenging. This is not

only because of the socio-economic status of most Pilipino people but with so
much disruptions of classes that occurs in every school year ever since.
Natural calamities, celebrations, local and national events, and recently, a
global pandemic (Covid19) strike almost the entire world. These are some
circumstances that can affects face-to-face teaching and learning process.

With those in mind, education should be not disrupted despite all these events
happening around us. According to the 21st century education, we should be
preparing our learners for the future using various essential skills. In this
modern changing world where information can be access by just one click,
learning should never stop. If that’s the case, why do we still experience class
disruption? How can we manage to have a disruption free education?

Disruption free education is where learning never stops despite many

interruptions may happen along the way. Teachers and learners are working
hand in hand to attain specific educational goals. We also accept the fact that
learning is not only happening inside the four corners of the classroom but
outside the real world. Since information is readily available for everyone, the
most challenging part is to help learners on what, where, when, why and how
to process it thru the assistance of their teacher.

After collecting and analyzing data using the ALS SDO-Parañaque online
learning intervention during ECQ survey 2020 and based on teaching
experience, this LAC material will give you an idea on how to establish a
disrtupion free class using some important processes.

1. Establish a Class Network.

As a teacher, building rapport
to your learners is important
especially during the start of
the class. Communication in
all forms is the key to
establish good information
dissemination process. With
the current modern society,
almost everybody has their
own smart phones, social
media accounts and other
online platforms that can be
used to establish class
network.

Moreover, your first step to have a disruption free class is to know how you
will communicate with your learners incase interruption arises in the
easiest and quickest possible time. You must create a class network that
everyone can easily access everywhere they are. In the case of Philippine
setting, almost all students have their own social media accounts. In this
way, you can use this as your platforms to create a network with your
learners even you are not inside the classroom. On the contrary, please
bear in mind that everyone must be aware of the importance of data privacy
and security as part of digital ethics. Online and internet should not limit
you in having a class network.

2. Identify and Choose

Learning Strategies. After
creating your own class
network for communication,
your next step is to choose
your learning strategies on
how you will deliver your
lesson to your learners.
These strategies can be
divided into 2 major
categories, the asynchronous
and synchronous learning.

Asynchronous learning can be described as self-directed learning. Your can

use modular approach or assigning learning tasks ahead of time if you
already know that disruption is coming in the following days. Further,
using your class network, you can send your worksheets within the
interruption period if ever this happen without a prior notice.

Synchronous learning is teacher-facilitated learning. In this case, there is

already a real time interaction between teacher and learners even if they
are not physically present in one room. However, technology and internet
connectivity are crucial in this strategy. Meaning, readiness of both teacher
and learners in accessibility and skills should be considered to make this
strategy effective. Some of synchronous learning strategies that you can
use are live chatting or sms, voice calling, video conferencing and any other
online classrooms tools.

In addition, it is still very important to plan your lessons and provide guided
tasks to your learners both in asynchronous and synchronous learning
strategies. To have a disruption free class you should choose the easiest
and most accessible learning strategies for everyone. You should not limit
yourself in one strategy. Remember, there is no “one size fits all” strategy
in education.

3. Learning Assessment.
Learning strategies and
assessment can never be
separated from one another.
Assessment determines if
your strategies are effective
or not. Although,
assessment can be seen in
different forms and parts of
the lesson, one of the easiest
ways to find out if your
learners are learning is by
checking their output.
Therefore, the next part is to
know how you will get the outputs of your leaners. If you establish your
class network and choose the most accessible strategy, learning
assessment will now be easy for you.

If you use asynchronous teaching strategies, collecting learners’ output is

the most challenging part. Your learners may submit their output using the
class network you establish with them. By doing this, you need to allot time
to check their works. Submission period must also be considered. Setting
timeline to your given tasks could help your learners to focus before the
submission date. You can also do self-assessment strategies to make things
easy for you in recording their outputs. Only scores will be submitted to
you. Learning to trust your learners is also one way of teaching them self-
accountability. If you there is no way to collect the outputs, that’s the only
time you are going to wait until regular class resume.

On the other hand, using synchronous teaching strategies is much easier

for to conduct learning assessment. By doing this, you can easily collect
the outputs or scores of your learners and get a real time answer to your
questions. Collaboration with their classmates is not neglected even in
distance learning. Although, in some scenario you will still need to check
the works on your own using this strategy.

Remember, if some of your learners cannot submit their outputs don’t get
frustrated. Each has their own reason why things cannot be accomplished
in a given time specially in distance learning. This is moment you can
assess whether you are going to use other strategies for them or not.

4. Provide Feedback. The last

part of the cycle is to provide
feedback to your learners.
Giving feedback to the
learners works and outputs is
something you should not
forget before going back to the
cycle. Correcting wrong
answers and clarifying
misconceptions happen in
this part. So that learners will
know if they progress or
acquire the skills you want
them to have in your lesson.
Hence, giving feedbacks to your learners must be quick, accurate and
considerate. Remember, feedbacking is all about your learners. Focus on
their needs as learners and think about their situation during the time of
class disruption. They need to feel that you are concern about them and
not because you need accomplish a report.

Common Challenges in Establishing Disruption Free Class

Common Challenges Some suggestions to overcome

these challenges
Network Connectivity 1. Know all the accessibility and contact information of
your learners.
2. Use the most accessible platforms to establish class
network
3. Clustering of learners based on location would be an
advantage to disseminate information
4. Text messages is still effective today

Availability of 1. Know what technology/devices your learners have

Technology 2. Share resources with others
3. Not all lessons and skills are dependent on
technology

Teachers-Students 1. Acquire skills even without formal training

Skills 2. Know different synchronous and asynchronous
online learning platforms
3. Practice using different platforms even without class
disruption to familiarize your learners to the system.

Readiness of learning 1. Prepare your learning materials ahead of time

materials 2. Use readily available learning materials with
validation
3. Provide guide questions in all your learning
interventions.
