Professional Teaching Standards

The INTASC standards serve as a resource for other states and teachers to help them

develop policies and procedures for licensing, supporting, and evaluating teachers today. The

INTASC standards are grouped into 4 categories: The Learner and learning, Content,

Instructional Practice, and Professional Responsibility (Council of Chief State School Officers

2011). Teaching standards are provided for each category based on the theme. Providing

students with the best equal educational opportunities and outcomes is the teacher’s

responsibility. The professional responsibility of teachers is to create a safe positive learning

environment for their students. It is also the teacher’s responsibility to teach to ensure that each

student learns new skills, and that teachers bring a unique teaching skill to each student in the

classroom.

Key Themes

One of the key themes is The Learner and Learning. Under this theme there are 3

standards. The 3 standards are Learner Development, Learning Differences, and Learning

environments (Council of Chief State School Officers, 2011). Learner Development is a standard

that makes sure that teachers understand how each student as an individual grow and develop.

The next standard under this theme is learning differences (Council of Chief State School

Officers 2011). It is important as a teacher to know that every student learns differently from the

next. A teacher may have to change their teaching style to accommodate particular students

without making them feel singled out. The last standard under this theme is Learning

Environments. It is the teacher’s responsibility to make a warm, welcoming, atmosphere and

environment comfortable for the students to learn.

Professional Learning and Ethical Practice is a standard that reflects The Professional

Responsibility theme. It is the responsibility of the teacher to maintain a professional relationship

with not only the students but your coworkers as well. The teacher is responsible for adapting to

meet the needs of each student and uses performance assessments to evaluate and realign their

standards to meet their students needs (Council of Chief State School Officers, 2011).

Collaboration

In order for students to be successful within the classroom the teacher will have to

collaborate with students as well as their families and coworkers. Teachers work with others to

create a positive learning environment for all the students in the classroom. A teacher can

collaborate with others by talking to parents and finding out how their child is and ways that you

can be more helpful with their child. Teachers can also collaborate with other teachers about

students. A student may act differently in one classroom as opposed to another because they may

be able to get away with more with another teacher. Collaborating with other teachers can also

make sure that everyone is on the same page for the advantage of the student. Data informed

decision making is using data to inform and make decisions based on data received (Business

Insights Blog 2019). This could be anything from a survey to a test in the classroom that gives

the teacher information.

Teachers are with students more everyday essentially than they are with their families.

Making students feel important and welcome and help the flourish in your classroom. Each

student deserves an equal learning opportunity, and each teacher should make a welcoming

warm classroom for their students.
