Q20. A slab of material of dielectric constant K has the same area as that of the plates of a parallel plate
capacitor but has the thickness d/2, where d is the separation between the plates. Find out the
expression for its capacitance when the slab is inserted between the plates of the capacitor. 2
Q21. Define the term ‘mobility’ of the charge carrier in a current carrying conductor. Obtain the relation
for mobility in terms of relaxation time.

width of the depletion layer , and value of potential barrier affected when the p – n junction is
forward biased?

almost independent of the applied voltage up to the critical voltage. 2

Q26. (a) Find equivalent capacitance between A and B in the combination given below. Each
capacitor is of 2 μF capacitance.
(b) If a dc source of 7 V is connected across AB, how much charge is drawn from the source and
what is the energy stored in the network? 3
Q27. The magnetic field through a circular loop of wire, 12cm in radius and 8.5Ω resistance, changes
with time as shown in the figure.
The magnetic field is perpendicular to the plane of the loop. Calculate the current induced in the
loop and plot a graph showing induced current as a function of time. 3
Q28. Show diagrammatically the behaviour of magnetic field lines in the presence of paramagnetic and
diamagnetic substances. How does one explain this distinguishing feature?

(a) Define the term magnetic susceptibility and Obtain its relation in terms of relative magnetic
permeability.
(b) The permeability of a magnetic material is 0.9983. Name the type of magnetic material. 3
The masses of deuteron, helium and neutron expressed in amu are 2.015, 3.017 and 1.009
respectively. If 1 kg of deuterium undergoes complete fusion, find the amount of total energy
released.
OR
Draw a graph showing the variation of binding energy per nucleon with mass number of different
nuclei. Write any two salient features of the curve. How does this curve explain the release of energy
both in the processes of nuclear fission and fusion. 3

Q31. (a) Two long straight parallel conductors carrying currents I1 and I2 are separated by a distance
d. If the currents are flowing in the same direction, show how the magnetic field produced by
one exerts an attractive force on the other. Obtain the expression for this force and hence
define 1 ampere.
(b) A square loop of side 20 cm carrying current of 1A is kept near an infinite long straight wire
carrying a current of 2A in the same plane as shown in the figure. Calculate the magnitude
and direction of the net force exerted on the loop due to the current carrying conductor.
OR
(a) Draw a labelled diagram of a moving coil galvanometer. Describe briefly its principle and
working.
(b) Give reasons :
I. It is necessary to introduce a cylindrical soft iron core inside the coil of a galvanometer.
II. Increasing the current sensitivity of a galvanometer may not necessarily increase its voltage
sensitivity. 5
Q32. (a) Write two points of difference between an interference pattern and a diffraction pattern.
(c) Draw the graph showing intensity distribution of fringes with phase angle due to diffraction
through a single slit. What is the width of the central maximum in comparison to that of a
secondary maximum?
OR
(a) Use Huygen’s geometrical construction to show how a plane wave front at t = 0 propagates
and produces a wave-front at a later time.
(b) Verify using Huygen’s principle , Snell’s law of refraction of a plane wave propagating from
denser to rarer medium.
(c) When monochromatic light is incident on a surface separating two media , the reflected and
refracted light both have the same frequency. Why? 5
Q33. (a) State two observations of photoelectric effect which could only be explained by Einstein’s
photoelectric equation.
(b) The maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectrons emitted is doubled when the wavelength
of light incident on the photosensitive surface changes from λAto λB .Deduce expressions
for the threshold wavelength and work function for the metal surface in terms of λA and λB.

(iii)A power transmission line feeds input power at 2300 V to a step down transformer with its
primary windings having 4000 turns. Find the number of turns in the secondary in order to get
output power at 230 V.
