(1) There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.


(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E. All the
sections are compulsory.
(3) Section A contains eighteen MCQs of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven questions of two marks
each, Section C contains five questions of three marks each, section D contains three long questions of
five marks each and Section E contains two case study based questions of 4 marks each.
(4) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section B, C, D and E. You
have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.

capacitor is of 2 μF capacitance.

(b) If a dc source of 7 V is connected across AB, how much charge is drawn from the source and
what is the energy stored in the network? 3

Q27. The magnetic field through a circular loop of wire, 12cm in radius and 8.5Ω resistance, changes
with time as shown in the figure.

The magnetic field is perpendicular to the plane of the loop. Calculate the current induced in the
loop and plot a graph showing induced current as a function of time. 3

(b) In the fusion reaction

The masses of deuteron, helium and neutron expressed in amu are 2.015, 3.017 and 1.009
respectively. If 1 kg of deuterium undergoes complete fusion, find the amount of total energy
released.

Draw a graph showing the variation of binding energy per nucleon with mass number of different
nuclei. Write any two salient features of the curve. How does this curve explain the release of energy
both in the processes of nuclear fission and fusion. 3

Calculate the resistance of the diode at I = 15 mA and v = - 10V

Q31. (a) Two long straight parallel conductors carrying currents I1 and I2 are separated by a distance
d. If the currents are flowing in the same direction, show how the magnetic field produced by
one exerts an attractive force on the other. Obtain the expression for this force and hence
define 1 ampere.

(b) A square loop of side 20 cm carrying current of 1A is kept near an infinite long straight wire
carrying a current of 2A in the same plane as shown in the figure. Calculate the magnitude
and direction of the net force exerted on the loop due to the current carrying conductor.

OR
(a) Draw a labelled diagram of a moving coil galvanometer. Describe briefly its principle and
working.
(b) Give reasons :
I. It is necessary to introduce a cylindrical soft iron core inside the coil of a galvanometer.
II. Increasing the current sensitivity of a galvanometer may not necessarily increase its voltage
sensitivity. 5

Q32. (a) Write two points of difference between an interference pattern and a diffraction pattern.

(b) A narrow slit is illuminated by a parallel beam of monochromatic light of wavelength λ


equal to 6000 Å and the angular width of the central maximum in the resulting diffraction
pattern is measured. When the slit is next illuminated by light of wavelength λ’, the angular
width decreases by 30%. Calculate the value of the wavelength λ’.

(c) Draw the graph showing intensity distribution of fringes with phase angle due to diffraction
through a single slit. What is the width of the central maximum in comparison to that of a
secondary maximum?

(a) Use Huygen’s geometrical construction to show how a plane wave front at t = 0 propagates
and produces a wave-front at a later time.

(b) Verify using Huygen’s principle , Snell’s law of refraction of a plane wave propagating from
denser to rarer medium.

(c) When monochromatic light is incident on a surface separating two media , the reflected and
refracted light both have the same frequency. Why? 5

Q33. (a) State two observations of photoelectric effect which could only be explained by Einstein’s
photoelectric equation.

(b) The maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectrons emitted is doubled when the wavelength
of light incident on the photosensitive surface changes from λAto λB .Deduce expressions
for the threshold wavelength and work function for the metal surface in terms of λA and λB.

Q34. CASE STUDY 01 : TRANSFORMERS

READ THE GIVEN INFORMATION CAREFULLY AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS–


The large-scale transmission and distribution of electrical energy over long distances is done with
the use of transformers. The voltage output of the generator is stepped-up. It is then transmitted over
long distances to an area sub-station near the consumers. There the voltage is stepped down. It is
further stepped down at distributing sub-stations and utility poles before a power supply of 240 V
reaches our homes.

(i) State the working principle of the transformer.


(ii)Why is the core of a transformer laminated?

(iii)A power transmission line feeds input power at 2300 V to a step down transformer with its
primary windings having 4000 turns. Find the number of turns in the secondary in order to get
output power at 230 V.

(iii)Explain briefly any two reasons due to which energy losses may occur in the actual transformer.

Q35. CASE STUDY 02 : OPTICAL FIBRES

READ THE GIVEN INFORMATION CAREFULLY AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS–


Optical Fibres used in Defense Purpose Fibre optics are used for data transmission in high-level data
security fields of military and aerospace applications. These are used in wirings in aircraft,
hydrophones for SONARs and Seismics applications. Optical Fibres are used in Industries. Metal
wires are preferred for transmission in optical fiber communication as signals travel with fewer
damages. Optical fibers are also unaffected by electromagnetic interference.
