General Instructions

(1) There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory


(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D
and Section E. All the sections are compulsory.
(3) Section A contains eighteen MCQ of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven
questions of two marks each, Section C contains five questions of three marks each,
section D contains three long questions of five marks each and Section E contains
two case study based questions of 4 marks each.
(4) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in
section B, C, D and E .You have to attempt only one of the choices in such
questions.
(5) Use of calculators is not allowed.

31. (a)Derive the expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor having plate area 5
A and plate separation d.
(b)Two parallel plate capacitors X and Y have the same area of plates and same separation
between them. X has air between the plates while Y contains a dielectric medium of εr =
4.

(i) Calculate capacitance of each capacitor if equivalent capacitance of the combination is 4


pF.
(ii) Calculate the potential difference between the plates of X and Y.

(a)State ‘Gauss law’ in electrostatics. Use this law to derive an expression for the electric
field due to an infinitely long straight wire of linear charge density λ Cm-1
(b)The electric field components due to a charge inside the cube of side 0.1 m are as
shown :
Ex = α x, where α = 500 N/C-m

Calculate
(i) the flux through the cube, and
(ii) the charge inside the cube.

32. (a) In a single slit diffraction experiment, a slit of width ‘d’ is illuminated by red light of 5
wavelength 650 nm. For what value of ‘d’ will the first minimum fall at an angle of
diffraction of 30°
(b)Draw a labelled ray diagram of a reflecting telescope. Mention its two advantages over
the refracting telescope.
(c)Using Huygen’s construction draw a figure showing the propagation of a plane wave
refracting at a plane surface separating two media. Hence verify Snell’s law of refraction.

(a)Draw a ray diagram for the formation of image by a compound microscope. Write the
expression for total magnification when the image is formed at infinity.
(b)A plane wavefront is incident at an angle of incidence i on a reflecting surface. Draw a
diagram showing incident wavefront, reflected wavefront and using Huygen’s principle
verify the laws of reflection.

(a) Why do the ‘free electrons’, in a metal wire, ‘flowing by themselves’ not cause any net

terms of the drift velocity’ of the free electrons.
(c) Use the above expression to show that the ‘resistivity’, of the material of a wire, is’
inversely proportional to the ‘relaxation time’ for the ‘free electrons’ in the metal.

Read the following paragraph and answer the questions
An extrinsic semiconductor is one that is doped with a specific impurity in order to
improve the conducting properties. This makes the semiconductor suitable for electronic
applications like diodes, transistors etc. Depending on the kind of impurities added to the
semiconductor it becomes either p-type or n-type.
1) Which type of impurity is added to make a p type semiconductor? Name one such
impurity.
2) What is the net charge on n type semiconductor?
3) Draw a energy band diagram for n type semiconductor. Also mark donor energy
level in it.

Give any two point of difference between n type and p type semiconductor.
35. Case study 4
Read the following paragraph and answer the questions
Sometimes waves don't travel in a straight line, even if their speed does not change. For
example, you can hear the conversation in the next room even though you cannot see the
source. This is because sound waves undergo diffraction, bending and spreading as they go
through the doorway between the two rooms. Diffraction only occurs when the wavelength
is close to the size of the opening or object. In the picture below Jack can hear Jill talking
although they cannot see each other.

1) What do you understand by diffraction of light?


2) Why do we not encounter diffraction of light in everyday observation?
3) Plot a graph for the intensity distribution with angle in single slit diffraction
