SECTION E
34 A Capacitor is a system of two conductors separated by a insulator.
The conductors have charges say Q1 and Q2, and potentials V1 and
V2. Usually in practice, the two conductors have charges Q and -Q,
with potential difference V = V1-V2 between them, the electric field
in the region between the conductors is proportional to the charge.
If the charge on the capacitor is doubled, the electric field will also
be doubled.

A parallel plate capacitor consists of two large plane parallel

conducting plates separated by a small distance. We first take the
intervening medium between the plates to be vacuum, If dielectric
medium is introduced between plates, the capacitance of the
capacitor changes.

by half and the space between the plates is filled with a material
of dielectric constant 6, then what is the new capacitance of the
capacitor?
7
OR
(iii) A parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates is charged
to a potential difference 500V. The gap between the plates is filled
with a plastic sheet, now the potential difference between the plates
is 75V.What is the dielectric constant of the plastic sheet?

35 An electric current can be induced in a coil by flux change

produced by another coil in its vicinity or flux change produced by
the same coil. The flux through the coil is proportional to the
current. Figure shows two long co-axial solenoids each of length
‘l’ , the radius of inner solenoid S1 by r1 and the number of turns
per unit length by n1. The corresponding quantities for the outer
solenoid S2 are r2 and n2 respectively. Let N1 and N2 be the total
number of turns of coils S1 and S2 respectively.

When a current I2 is set up through S2, it in turn sets up a magnetic

flux through S1, N1 φ1 = M12 I2. Where M12 is called the mutual
inductance of solenoid S1 with respect to solenoid S2. It is also
referred to as the coefficient of mutual induction. It is also
important to know that the mutual inductance of a pair of coil
depends on the separation as well as their relative orientation.
1

(ii) What is relation between mutual inductance, number of turns
of coils and its geometry?
2
(iii)What is the mutual inductance between two coils if a current
10A in one coil changes the flux by 500 weber per turn in
another coil of 200 turns.
OR
(iii) The mutual inductance of a pair of coils is 0.75H. If the current
in the primary coil change from 0.5A to 1A in 0.1sec, find the
average emf induced in the secondary coil.
