27 A square coil of side 10cm consists of 20 turns and carries a current of 12A. The coil is suspended 3
vertically and the normal to the plane of the coil makes an angle of 300 with the direction of a
uniform horizontal magnetic field of magnitude 0.80T. What is the magnitude of torque
experienced by the coil?
28 Calculate the current drawn by the primary coil of a transformer which steps down 200V to 20V 3
to operate a device of resistance 20Ω. Assume the efficiency of the transformer to be 80%.

31 (a) State Gauss’s Theorem in electrostatics? Using this theorem derive an expression for the 5
field intensity due to an infinite plane sheet of charge density σ C/m2 .
(b) Two large, thin metal plates are parallel and close to each other. On their inner faces, the
plates have surface charge densities of opposite signs and of magnitude 17 X 10-22 C/m2 .
What is E in the outer region of the first plate? What is E in the outer region of the second
plate? What is E between the plates?

(a) Find out the expression for potential energy stored per unit volume in a capacitor.
(b) A parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates has a capacitance of 8pF. What will be
the capacitance if the distance between the plates is reduced by half and the space between
them is filled with a substance of dielectric constant 6?

supply using a series resistor of 15.5 Ω. What is the terminal voltage of the battery during
charging? What is the purpose of having a series resistor in the charging circuit?
33 (a) A ray of light is incident normally on one face of the prism of apex angle 300 and refractive 5
index √2. Find the angle of deviation for the ray of light.
(b) Using Huygens’s principle, deduce the laws of refraction.

(a) Draw a ray diagram of an astronomical telescope for the final image formed at least distance
of distinct vision?
(b) An astronomical telescope has an angular magnification of magnitude 5 for distant objects.
The separation between the objective and an eye piece is 36 cm and the final image is
formed at infinity. Calculate the focal length of the objective and the focal length of the eye
piece?

34 Case Study : Lens Maker Formula 4
The lens makers formula relates the focal length of a lens to the refractive index of its material
and the radii of curvature of its two surfaces. This formula is used to manufacture a lens of
particular focal length from the glass of a given refractive index. For this reason, it is called the
lens makers formula.

(i) An unsymmetrical double convex thin lens forms the image of a point object on its axis.
Will the position of the image change if the lens is reversed?
(ii) Will the focal length of a lens for red light be more, same or less than that for blue light?
(iii) Find out the power of a combined lens with two lenses of focal length 0.4m and 25cm.
OR
A convex lens made of a material of refractive index n1 is kept in a medium of refractive
index n2. Parallel rays of light are incident on the lens. Complete the path of rays of light
emerging from the convex lens if: (i) n1 > n2 (ii) n1 < n2.
35 CASE STUDY : ENERGY BAND GAP 4
From Bohr’s atomic model, we know that the electrons have well defined energy levels in an
isolated atom. But due to interatomic interactions in a crystal, the electrons of the outer shells
are forced to have energies different from those in isolated atoms. Each energy level splits into
a number of energy levels forming a continuous band. The gap between top of valence band and
bottom of the conduction band in which no allowed energy levels for electrons can exist is called
energy gap.
(i) Give the ratio of the number of holes and number of conduction electrons in an intrinsic
semiconductor.
(ii) Differentiate between intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductor.
(iii) Give reason, why, a p-type semiconductor crystal is electrically neutral?
OR
How does the energy gap of an intrinsic semiconductor vary, when doped with a
pentavalent impurity? Name such type of semiconductor and draw energy band diagram
for it.
