ASSIGNMENT 1
1
INSTALLATION MATERIALS AND THEIR USEES FOR ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS CIRCUITS IN
HOUSE
1. Wiring materials
These are materials which are made by aluminium, copper or silver. These
materials are classified into three types according to their properties which are
conducting materials, Insulating materials and semiconductor materials.
Conducting Material
(a) Copper
It is a good conductor of electricity. It is used in wiring materials in cables.
Its has low resistance and is used for conduction of electricity at high,
medium and low voltage.
(b) Aluminium It is light weight and cheaper in comparison to copper.
Therefore, this type of conducting material is mostly used in electrical
wiring. It is silvery–white in colour and it has a soft texture. It is often used
in wiring and making cable.
Insulating Materials
Are used for insulating purpose. These types of materials are bad
conductors of current. For example rubber, paper, mica, wood, glass and
cotton.
2. A switch
A switch is used to make or break an electrical circuit. It is used to switch ‘on’
or ‘off ’ the supply of electricity to an appliance. There are various switches
such as surface switch flush switch ceiling switch pull switch push button
switch bed switch .
I. Surface switch:
It is mounted on wooden boards fixed on the surface of a wall. It is of three
types:
One-way switch: It is used to control single circuits and lamp.
Two-way switch: It is used to divert the flow of current to either
of two directions. The two-way switch can also be used to control
2
one lamp from two different places as in the case of staircase
wiring.
Intermediate switch: It is used to control a lamp from more than
two locations
II. Flush switch: It used for decorative purpose.
III. Bed switch: As the name indicates, it is used to switch ‘on’ the light from any place,
other than switch board or from near the bed. This switch is connected through a
flexible wire.
3. Holders
A holder is used to support lamps and connect them to electrical circuits. They
hold light bulbs and make electrical contact to provide a bulb with power. They are
in two types which are Pendant holder and Batten holder.
4. Ceiling rose It is used to provide a tapping to the pendant lamp– holder
through the flexible wire or a connection to a fluorescent tube.
6. Main switch is a central cut-off switch that controls the smaller cut-off
switches and machines of a building. The main switch can be cut off by a
human or a computerized system to control the flow of power in the building.
9. Electric Meter: First in the list of common electrical parts you see everyday
is the Electric meter. It is used by the national electricity grid to measure the
units of electrical energy used in your household circuits. Yeah, that’s how
they find the amount you need to pay for your electricity bill per month.
10.A fuse:A fuse is an electrical part which you can’t see as it’s always inside a
plug or an electrical device such as TV.Basically fuses are used to protect
electrical appliances, parts and electronic components from potential damage
due to a high current – Ampere – flowing in the circuit.
