Time Allowed: 3.00 Hrs. class -XII Subject- Physics M.M -70

General Instructions:
(1) All questions are compulsory. There are 33 questions in all.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section Dand Section E.
(3) Section A contains ten very short answer questions and four assertion reasoning MCQs of 1 mark
each, Section B has two case based questions of 4 marks each, Section C contains nine short
answer questions of 2 marks each, Section D contains five short answer questions of 3 marks each
and Section E contains three long answer questions of 5 marks each.
(4) There is no overall choice. However internal choice is provided. You have to attempt only one of
the choices in such questions.
(5) Use of calculators is not permitted.

Section – A
All questions are compulsory. In case of internal choices, attempt any one of them.
1- Is the charge 4.8 x10-20 C possible on a body? 1
2- Draw a graph to show a variation of resistance of a metal wire as a function of its diameter
keeping its length and material constant. 1
3- A cell of emf E and internal resistance r is connected across an external resistance R. Plot a graph
showing variation of P. D. across R., versus R.

How does one explain increase in resistivity of a metal with increase of temperature? 1

4- Write the condition under which an electron will move undeflected in the presence of crossed electric and magnetic
fields. 1
5- When a charged particle moves in a magnetic field normally; what quantity changes –the
particle’s speed, particle’s energy, path of the motion of the particle? 1
6- A step up transformer is used on a 120 V line to provide a potential difference of 2400 V. If the primary has 75 turns,
how many turns must the secondary have ? 1
7- If the ammeter in the given circuit shown in the diagram reads 2A, what is the value of resistance R? 1
8- How does the width of a depletion region of a pn junction vary if doping concentration is increased?

In half wave rectification, what is the output frequency if input frequency is 50 Hz? 1
9- An electron is accelerated by applying a potential difference of 54 V. Calculate the value of De- Broglie wavelength
associated with it. 1

10- Why a.c. measuring instruments have a non linear scale?

For question numbers 11, 12, 13 and 14, two statements are given-one labelled Assertion (A) and the other labelled Reason

11- Assertion:- Electric lines of force never intersect.
Reason:- They are imaginary lines, so as per supposition they can not cross each – other. 1

only the capacitance is removed, the current lags behind the voltage by 600 . when only the inductance is removed,

17- A galvanometer has resistance of G ohm and range of V volt. Calculate the value of resistance used in terms of ‘G’ to
convert it into a voltmeter of range nV volt. 2
18- What is self induction? Write expression for self inductance of a long solenoid. What is the effect on self inductance, if
an iron rod is inserted in core of the solenoid? 2
19- Give expression for force acting per unit length between two infinitely long parallel wires of
negligible cross section area separated by some distance. Also define unit of electric current by this expression. 2
20- A bright patch is observed at the middle of the shadow of a tiny obstacle placed in the path of the
light from a distance source. Name the phenomenon of the cause and explain. 2

21- The focal length of a convex lens made of glass of refractive index 1.5 is 20 cm. What will be its new focal length when
placed in a medium of refractive index 1.25? 2
22- The work function for a given photosensitive surface is 2.5 eV. When light of frequency falls on
this surface, the emitted photoelectrons are completely stopped by applying retarding potential of
4.1 V. Estimate the value of the frequency of the light incidenting on the surface. 2

23- The value of ground state energy of Hydrogen atom is -13.6 eV.
(i) Find the energy required to move an electron from the ground state to the first excited state of the atom.
(ii) Determine the kinetic energy of the electron in the first excited state of the atom.

24- Draw a labelled ray diagram of an astronomical telescope in the normal adjustmentposition and find the
magnitudes of the magnifying power of the telescope if the focal length of the objective lens is = 15 m
and the focal length of an eye lens is 5cm. 2

25- Show that nuclear density is independent of mass number. Calculate the order of nuclear density. 2

26- State principle of potentiometer. Make circuit diagram and write formula for calculating internal
resistance of a cell. 3

27- In the given circuit, a metre bridge is shown in the balanced state. The metre bridge wire has a resistance
of 0.1 ῼ cm-1. Calculate the unknown resistance X and the current drawn from the battery of a negligible
internal resistance if the magnitude of Y is 6 ῼ. If at the balancing point, we interchange the position of galvanometer
and the cell, how it will affect the null position of the galvanometer? 3

28- Figure shows a rectangular conducting loop PQRS in which arm of length RS is movable. The loop is kept in a uniform
magnetic field directed downwards perpendicular to the plane of the loop. The arm is moved with a uniform speed v. Deduce
the expression for the
(a) emf induced across the arm
(b) external force required to move the arm, and
(c) power dissipated as heat.
OR
(i) Derive an expression for the mutual inductance of two long coaxial solenoids of same length wound one over the
other.
(ii) Write the factors on which the mutual inductance of a pair of solenoids depends. 3
29- Name the following constituent radiations of electromagnetic spectrum which
(i) has its wavelength range between 390 nm to 770 nm .
(ii) produce intense heating effect/ used in warfare to look through fog .
(iii) are used for radar systems used in aircraft navigation . 3

30- Use Huygens’ principle to verify the laws of reflection.

Derive Snell’s law on the basis of Huygen’s wave theory when light is travelling from a rarer to a denser medium

Section – E
All questions are compulsory. In case of internal choices, attempt any one.
31- (a) State Gauss law in electrostatics. Show, with the help of a suitable figure that the outward flux due to a point charge
’q’, in vacuum within a closed surface is independent of its size or shape.
(b) Two uniformly charged plane infinite sheets, 1 and 2, have charge densities +σ and -2σ respectively. Give the
magnitude and direction of the net electric field at a point
(i) in between the two sheets
(ii) outside to sheet 1 (left)

OR
(a) Define electrostatic potential at a point. Write its S I unit. There are three point charges q1, q2 and q3 kept at the
vertices of an equilateral triangle. Derive the expression for electrostatic potential energy of the system.
(b) Depict an equipotential surface due to
(i) an electric dipole,
(ii) Two identical positive charges separated by a distance. 3+2

32- In Young's double slit experiment two slits are illuminated by red monochromatic light source.
(a) If one of the slits is closed, what will be the observation on the screen?
(b) Derive an expression for fringe width of interference pattern.
(c) What happens to the fringe width, if the experimental arrangement is immersed in water?

OR
When a point object is placed in front of a Convex spherical refracting surface an image is formed in the refracting
medium.
(a) Complete the ray diagram to locate the position of the image
(b) Obtain the expression for the relation between position of image inside refracting medium(v), Position of object (u),
Radius of curvature ( r ) and refractive index of media.
(c) If the refracting surface is concave in nature, with the same setup, locate the position of the image by drawing a ray
diagram. 1+3+1

33- (a) Explain briefly with the help of a circuit diagram how V-I characteristics of a p-n junction diode are obtained in
(i) forward bias, and (ii) reverse bias.
(b) A photodiode is fabricated from a semiconductor with a band gap of 2.8 eV. Can it detect wavelength of 6000 nm?
Justify. 3+2
OR
Explain the use of a p-n junction diode as a rectifier. Draw the circuit diagram of a full wave rectifier. Explain its
working giving its input – output waveforms.
