Press review : Jakarta’s air quality kills its


residents – and it’s getting worse

The article under review is an article written by Kate Walton, it was published in the
interpreter newspaper in July 2019. He discusses the problems of air pollution in the city of
Jakarta in Indonesia. First, it takes stock, considering various opinions, and secondly, it
highlights solutions that the public is trying to put in place.
Firstly, the article highlights the fact that pollution is a concrete problem that persists over
time. This can be seen from the figures given in the article. Jakarta is the most polluted city of
2019. The scientific evidence even leads to the following conclusion: this pollution
drastically reduces the lifespan of the inhabitants. Subsequently, the article also highlights the
opinion of the activist, which allows us to understand the main causes of this pollution thanks
to their objectivity on the situation. These residents, who are trying to get things moving and
questioning the state’s inaction, will file a plea against political figures. The director of an
environmental forum mentions a breach of the 1945 constitution, the right to clean air.
This article highlights the problems and solutions being put in place to reduce air pollution. It
allows to have both a scientific response and a resident’s response, which brings a completely
different approach to the problem.
