Chapter |
Big Barry Baker and his three friends,
Josie, Liz and Roy, were sitting in the
classroom. ‘Their teacher, Mr Wise,
had asked them to make up a story.
‘I can’t think of a story,’ said Barry quietly.
Just then Mr Wise said, ‘Now, children,
put your pencils down and look this way.
I have something to tell you.’
The children looked at Mr Wise.
‘We’re all going to the theatre,’ said
Mr Wise. ‘We're going to see a
pantomime called Cinderella. I have
some letters here. You must all take
them home and ask your mum or dad if
you can go.’
‘Now you can get on with your stories,’
said Mr Wise.
‘Do you know what I’m going to make up
a story about?’ Barry said to his friends.
‘Cinderella!’ they all said at once.
Big Barry Baker smiled.
All day Big Barry Baker couldn’t stop
thinking about going to the theatre. He
had never been to a pantomime before.
He asked his friends what it was like.
‘It’s good fun,’ said Josie.
‘Sometimes you can go up on the stage,’
said Roy.
Big Barry Baker went very quiet and
said nothing.
After that, the children talked about
the pantomime every day.
Josie, Liz and Roy made up their own
pantomime story and Mr Wise said they
could go into the hall and act it out for
their friends.
‘Who wants to come on the stage and
help us °’ asked Josie.
Big Barry Baker went very quiet again.
Chapter D

At last it was the day of the pantomime.

All the mums and dads came to school
with their children. hey waited in
the playground until the bus pulled up
outside the school. Then all the children
got on.
Big Barry Baker, Josie, Liz and Roy
waved to their mums and dads as
the bus slowly pulled away.
Big Barry Baker and his friends sat on the
back seat. ‘They were very noisy. Josie, Liz
and Roy all wanted to go on the stage.
‘T want to sing with Cinderella,’ said Roy.
‘We want to sit in Cinderella’s coach,’
said Josie and Liz.
Big Barry Baker went very quiet and
said nothing.
Soon the bus pulled up outside the
theatre. By now it was getting dark and
there were lots of lights around the sign
over the door. In big letters the sign
said CINDERELLA.
“This is it!’ shouted the children.
The children got off the bus and walked
quietly into the theatre. S
‘Don’t push,’ said Mr Wise. ‘I will show
you to your seats.’
The children were in the first row.
Big Barry Baker sat at the end of the row
with his friends.

Josie, Liz and Roy were happy to be in

the first row.
‘It’s good here because you can see
everything,’ said Josie.
‘And you can hear everything,’ said Liz.
‘And you can get up on the stage quickly,’
said Roy.
Big Barry Baker went very quiet and
said nothing.

Chapter 3

Suddenly the lights went down.

The curtain went up and the band
started to play.
The pantomime began.
The children loved it. When one of the
Ugly Sisters called out, ‘Oh yes it is,’
they all called out, ‘Oh no it isn’t.’
They laughed and called out again
and again.

13
Then the lights came on again.
‘Who wants an ice-cream?’ asked Mr Wise.
‘Yes please,’ said all the children.
Then Josie turned to Barry and said,
‘Do you think we will go up on the stage?’
Big Barry Baker went very quiet again.

14
ip
Then the lights went down again and
Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother came on
to the stage.
‘We need some help,’ she called out.
‘Who would like to come up on the stage
with us?’
Josie, Liz and Roy jumped up and down.
‘Pll help! Pll help? they shouted out.
Big Barry Baker sat quietly in his seat.

15
The Fairy Godmother looked at all
the children.
‘What about that boy sitting at the end
of the row?’ she said.
Everyone looked at Big Barry Baker.
‘Will you come on stage and help us?’
asked the Fairy Godmother.

16
Josie, Liz and Roy pushed Big Barry
Baker out of his seat and he climbed
slowly up on to the stage.
‘You look like just the boy to help us,’
said the Fairy Godmother.
Big Barry Baker’s face went very red.
‘Then the Fairy Godmother took him
backstage.
Josie, Liz and Roy sat down. They wished
they were with their friend.
‘What’s going to happen next?’ asked Liz.
She didn’t have to wait long to find out.
Big Barry Baker was coming back on
to the stage. His friends laughed
and shouted.
Big Barry Baker was an Ugly Sister!
He waved to his friends. Josie, Liz and
Roy waved back. Everyone was laughing
and having a good time.
Then Big Barry Baker started to laugh
and havea good time too.
