COLLISIONS

Head-On Collision:
A smooth sphere of mass 2 kg is moving with speed 3 m/s on a horizontal plane when it collides with a stationary smooth sphere
of equal size but mass 4 kg. If the coefficient of restitution between the spheres is 1/2 find the velocities of both spheres
after impact.
Two particles of equal mass 4M are initially at rest. A particle of mass M moving at speed u collides elastically with one of
the larger balls as shown in the figure. How many collisions occur?
A light inextensible string AB has the end A fixed to a vertical wall. The end B is attached to a small elastic object which is
drawn aside, from the wall, until the string makes an angle of 60° with the wall. The particle is then released from rest. Find
the angle which the string makes with the wall when the particle next comes to instantaneous rest if the value of e is 3/4.
A block of mass m moving at speed v collides with another block of mass 2 m at rest. The lighter block comes to rest after
the collision. Find the coefficient of restitution.
A bullet of mass 50 g is fired from below into the bob of mass 450 g of a long simple pendulum as shown in figure. The
bullet remains inside the bob and the bob rises through a height of 1.8 m. Find the speed of the bullet. Take g = 10 m/s2.
A block of mass m is connected to another block of mass M by a massless spring of spring constant k. The blocks are kept on
a smooth horizontal plane. Initially, the blocks are at rest and the spring is unstretched when a constant force F starts
acting on the block of mass M to pull it. Find the maximum extension of the spring.
A block of mass 200 g is suspended through a vertical spring. The spring is stretched by 1.0 cm when the block is in equilibrium.
A particle of mass 120 g is dropped on the block from a height of 45 cm. The particle sticks to the block after the impact. Find
the maximum extension of the spring. Take g = 10 m/s2.
A bullet of mass 20 g moving horizontally at a speed of 300 m/s is fired into a wooden block of mass 500 g suspended by a
long string. The bullet crosses the block and emerges on the other side. If the centre of mass of the block rises through a
height of 20.0 cm, find the speed of the bullet as it emerges from the block.
OBLIQUE COLLISION
1) During collision between two objects a pair of equal and opposite impulses act at the moment of impact. If just before
impact at least one of the objects was moving in direction different from the line of these impulses the collision is said to be
oblique.
2) In the figure, two balls collide obliquely. During collision impulses act in the direction of line of impact (line of action of
impulse). Line of impact will be along common normal
