1. Check the physician’s order for medication.
2. Washes hands then assemble equipment.
3. Identify and explain the procedure to the client.
4. For sublingual medication, request that the patient lift their
tongue towards the roof of their mouth and instruct them to
maintain this position while the medication is being
administered.
5. For buccal medication, request the patient to open their
mouth and slowly place the drug between the patient’s gum
and cheek.
6. Instruct patient to close his mouth and hold the tablet in the
same position until it is absorbed. 
7. Assess the patient closely for any change in condition
following the medication administration.
8. Discontinue the medication if adverse effects occur or as
directed by the physician.
9. Wash hands.
10. Document patient condition before and after the medication
administration.
