alternative for high cost medications.

HERBALISM
➢ is a traditional medicinal or folk medicine practice based on the use
of plants and plant extracts

➢ Also known as:


- botanical medicine - herbology
- medical herbalism - phytotherapy
- herbal medicine

1. AKAPULKO (CASIA/SENNA ALATA)
➢Also known as “bayabas-bayabasan” and “ringworm bush”
➢Asunting/Palochina – Bisaya
➢Talaingod – Manobo

➢Used to treat:
- ringworm - typhoid - herpes
- scabies - asthma - eczema
- skin fungal infection
2. AMPALAYA (Momordica Charantia)
➢Also known as:
- bitter gourd
- bitter melon

➢Uses:
- diabetes mellitus (non -insulin dependent patients)
- rich in Vitamin C
- high in Vitamin A
Daily consumption:
- 1 small bitter gourd/day
- 2 – 3 ounces/day
3. BAWANG (ALLIUM SATIVUM)
Also known as:
- garlic
Uses :
- lowers blood pressure
- reduces cholesterol in the blood
- alleviate toothache/quell inflammation
- reduce blood clotting
- antioxidants
Daily consumption :
1-3 grams/day or 600 – 1,200 mgs/day
BAYABAS (PSIDIUM GUAJAVA)
Also known as: Guava
Uses:
- antiseptic (disinfect wounds)
- mouth wash (tooth decay)
- gum infection
- diarrhea
Contains :
- Vitamin C, K, A, B6
5. LAGUNDI (VITEX NEGUNDO)
Also known as: 5-leaved chaste tree
Uses:
- relief of cough and asthma
- relieve: skin disease
headache/fever
sprain/rheumatism
insect bites/eczema
muscular pain
For cough: fresh or dried leaves, boil in 2 glasses of water for at least 15
mins.
½ of decoction 3x a day
6. NIYOG NIYOGAN (QUISQUALIS INDICA)

Also known as: Chinese Honey Suckles


Fake Palm
Uses:
- eliminate intestinal worms (Seeds)
- alleviate nephritis (inflammation of the kidney)
- remedy for boils and skin ulcers
For boils/skin ulcer:
- pound leaves and apply to boils or skin ulcer
7. SAMBONG (BLUMEA BALSAMIFERA)
Also known as: Blumea Camphora
Uses:
- diuretic/anti edema (leaves)
- anti diarrhea
- colds/cough (expectorant) Side Effects:
- antiseptic (wounds/cuts) - itching
- anti-urolithiasis (kidney stones) - skin irritation
For diuresis: 2 tabs. 3x a day
For anti-urolithiasis : 40 to 50 kgs/body weight in equal doses
8. TSAANG GUBAT (EHRETIA MICROPHYLLA)
Also known as:
- Scorpion bush
- Wild Tea
- Fukien Tea Tree
Uses:
- effective in treating diarrhea
- stomachache
- mouth wash
For Diarrhea:
- wash leaves and chop
- boil in 2 glasses of water until 1 glass remain
- cool and drain
- divide into 4 parts (drink ¼ part every 6 hours)
For Stomachache:
- wash leaves and chop
- boil in 1 glass of water for 15 mins
- cool and strain
- drink
9. ULASIMANG BATO (PEPEROMIA PELLUCIDA)
Also known as: PANSIT PANSITAN
- Sida sida
- Singaw singaw
Uses:
- effective in fighting arthritis/gout Preparation:
- hypertension salad
- renal disorders decoction
- urinary tract infection (UTI)
- cure pimples ( mashed and applied topically)
10. YERBA BUENA (CLINOPODIUM DOUGLASII)

Also known as: PEPPERMINT


Uses:
- body aches/pain
- rheumatism/arthritis
- toothache/swollen gums
- cough/colds

Can be taken internally : decoction

Externally : pound leaves and apply to affected area


MALUNGGAY – the wonder plant , “back pharmacy”, miracle
vegetable
➢Known as horseradish (English)

➢Can be used as:

- Food
- Antibiotic
- Source of oil
- Coagulant
Malunggay contains the following:

- 4 x the calcium in milk


- 7 x the Vit. C in orange
- 4 x the Vit A in carrots
- 3 x the potassium in banana
- 2 x the protein in milk
Malunggay also promotes:
> Good eyesight

➢Natural source of energy supplement
➢Facilitates bowel movement
➢Local cure for stomachache
➢Prevents arthritis
➢Prevents cancer

Different useful parts of malunggay:

Different Herbal Preparations
1. DECOCTION - laga or boil
2. POULTICE - tapal (may add oil)
3. INFUSION - hot water is added and can be used for 24 hours
4. SYRUP - Add sugar and for storage last for 3-5 days
5. OILS - garlic, luya, mansanilya, extracts
6. OINTMENT - with wax
7. TINCTURE - compose of water and alcohol
8. ELIXER - Admixture of 2 or more liquid ingredients
designed to be taken orally
Guides in Handling of Medicinal Plants
1. Buy herbs that are grown organically
2. Medicinal parts of plants are best harvested on sunny mornings
3. Leaves, fruits, flowers or nuts be mature before harvesting
4. If drying is required, it is advisable to dry plant parts in the oven
or air dried on screen above ground and never on concrete floors
5. Store plant parts in sealed plastic bags or brown bottles in a cool
dry place without sunlight
6. Put moisture absorbent material like charcoal
7. Well dried plant parts can be stored/used up to six months
Guidelines on Medicinal Plant Preparation
1. Use only half the dosage prescribed for fresh parts like leaves
when using dried parts.
2. Use only enamelled, earthen, glass or like utensils when preparing
a decoction
3. When boiling leaves and other plant parts, do not cover the pot
and boil in low flame
4. Dispose of decoctions after one day.
5. Keep decoctions in a flask or thermos
6. Consult doctor if symptoms persist or any allergic reactions occurs
