TENSILE TEST

Tensile test provides information about material strength including elongation and tensile strength.
This test also shows the strength of the seal. This test is used by food manufacturers to investigate
the seal failure and to investigate seal integrity versus opening strength.

Procedure

1. Material sample is cut using a template.

2. Its size depends upon the standard pin used for test.
3. Material sample is placed between the jaws of machine.
4. Upper jaw moves away from the lower jaw to pull the seal apart.
5. The graph generated (on the linked software screen) is related to seal profile.
6. The data collected from the graph is related with the seal strength.
7. Different seal generates different data depending upon the breaking force required for
particular seal.
8. This test also used for the force required to rupture the strip of paper. Thicker strip of paper
required greater force to rupture the piece of paper.
PERMEABILITY ANALYSIS

Permeability testing is used to test Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) and Water Vapor
Transmission Rate (WVTR) through plastic films and containers. This test analyze the barrier
properties between the films. It’s also important for food manufacturers to ensure the use of correct
impermeable material during packaging of food samples to increase the shelf life of products.

Procedure

1. A section of film is cut using a specific template of machine chamber.

2. The test is always carried out on deep cut film of sample.
3. Permeability analysis machine have two units; one measures the WVTR and other
measures the OTR.
4. Grease is applied on the surface of sample compartment, it ensure that the sample is placed
within the chamber in air tight seal.
5. Place the sample film on greased chamber and closed the lid with airtight closure.
6. Temperature and humidity of chamber can be varied depending upon the healthy material
that has to be stored in particular packaging.
7. Distilled water is used to vary the humidity.

For Oxygen Transmission Rate,

8. Oxygen is flushed from the top of the film and nitrogen from underneath the film.
9. Oxygen passes down from the film during the test is collected in nitrogen and detected on
the sensor machine and readout on the computer screen.
10. During the test a graph is produced showing the change in transmission rate over the time.

For Water Vapor Transmission Rate

8. Nitrogen containing water vapor is flushed on the top of film and dry nitrogen is flushed
underneath the film.

9. Water vapors passes through the film are collected in dry nitrogen present underneath the
film and detected on the sensor machine that is readout on the computer screen.

10. During the test a graph is produced showing the change in transmission rate over the time.
