Islam

Islam is a monotheistic religion founded in the 7th century in the Arabian Peninsula. Its central text, the
Quran, is considered the word of God as revealed to the prophet Muhammad. Islam is the second
largest religion in the world with over 1 billion followers. The followers of Islam are called Muslims and
the principles of the religion are based on the Five Pillars of Islam: the declaration of faith (shahada),
prayer (salat), charity (zakat), fasting (sawm) and pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj). Islam teaches that there is
only one God and that Muhammad is his final prophet. It also emphasizes social justice, equality and
compassion towards all people.
