4.

1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DASMARINAS CITY, CAVITE


Dasmariñas City is a part of CALABARZON (Region IV A) with a total of 75 barangays and
located 27 kilometers south of the center of the City of Manila. It is strategically located in the
intermediate zone of the Metropolitan Manila area and is a growing city with adequate accessibility
within the urbanizing development influence of Metro Manila and has some large educational and
health institutions that boost its economy. It serves as a linkage to Metro Manila in the north and
the developing provinces of Laguna and Batangas.

4.1.1 Geographic Boundaries


The City of Dasmariñas is approximately 90.13 square meters. It is bounded by the
municipalities of Imus in the north and Silang, Cavite in the south. The towns of San Pedro and
Biñan, Laguna and Carmona, Cavite bounds it at the east and at the west is bounded by General
Trias, Cavite. The city itself is landlocked, but it is not too far from the coastal towns such as
Rosario, Kawit, Bacoor, Noveleta and Cavite City. It has an elevation of 80 meters at the
Poblacion and rises to 250 meters towards Silang.

4.1.2 Population Structure


According to the 2015 Census, there were 659,019 people who resides in Dasmariñas
City with a density of 7,312 inhabitants per square kilometer.

4.1.3 Climate/ Temperature


The City of Dasmariñas has a tropical climate with wet season from May to December
and dry season from January to April. Temperature usually ranges from 21°C to 33°C.

4.2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF BARANGAY PALIPARAN III, DASMARIÑAS CITY, CAVITE


4.2.1 Geography
Barangay Paliparan III is a part of the larger Barrio Paliparan located at the south-
eastern part of the City of Dasmarinas. Neighboring barangays include General Mariano
Alvarez, and San Pedro, Laguna at the eastern side; Barangay Sampaloc IV at the western
side; Barangay Salawag at the north and Sitio ng Niyugan (Barangay Paliparan I) at the south.
It is about 8 km away from Dasmarinas City Hall. The terrain is generally flat beside a deep
river on its western border. The main road (Molino-Paliparan road) is located at the eastern
side which is stretched as far south to Governor’s Drive to Jose Abad Santos road in the north.
4.2.2 Road Condition
The road conditions going to Barangay Paliparan III was fair and paved, although there
were some minor potholes and bumps along the way. The assigned lot for this study is located
along the main road of the barangay. The road going to the lot is filled with a few potholes with
multiple vehicles and tricycles parked at the side of the road.

4.2.3 Number of Households and Spatial Arrangement of Houses


…. Houses are compressed and tightly packed to each other along the outer borders
of the block.

4.2.4 Source of Livelihood


Most residents from the barangay do not work within the immediate vicinity. Majority of
men that were surveyed work as construction or factory workers of nearby towns near
Dasmarinas City. Others that were interviewed, especially within …., get their source of
livelihood through owned stores since the block is also a commercial area.

4.2.5 Means of Transportation


The major means of commute from City center to Phase 5, Barangay Paliparan III is
through public transportation or jeepneys. The jeepneys pass through the Molino-Paliparan
road where the Barangay’s main access is located. Travelling within the barangay would
require a tricycle ride. The tricycles may be found parked near the barangay’s main entrance.
One may take a tricycle ride though from those plying along the main road of the barangay
either in search of passengers or to return to the main entrance to pick up passengers.

4.2.6 Health Resources/ Facilities


Barangay Paliparan III with its many phases share one Barangay Health Center. The
Barangay Health Center provide basic needs and services for the community and include
prenatal care, family planning, vaccination and dispensing maintenance medications for
hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The Barangay Health Unit (BHU) also has their own TB-
DOTS facility within its compound.

4.2.6.1 Rural Health Unit (RHU) Catchment Area


The main health center designated City Health Office 1 is located at 29 Don Placido
Campos Avenue, Dasmarinas City, Cavite. A barangay health station is located at Paliparan
3, Dasmarinas City, Cavite. This health station is assigned to Phases 1 to 5 of Barangay
Paliparan III with a total of 5 phases within its catchment area.

4.2.6.2 RHU Services


The main services that the barangay health station offers include prenatal check-ups,
immunizations, family planning counseling, and a TB-DOTS station. Pre-natal check-ups are
scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday while immunizations are usually scheduled every
Wednesday. They also dispense maintenance medications for hypertension and diabetes.
Every day, the health workers work with their assigned lots and do house-to-house visits in
search of stagnant waters. This was especially apparent considering the increased number of
dengue cases for the past few months during the time of interview.

4.2.6.4 Health Committee for the Barangay


There are 33 health workers employed at the Barangay Health Station. In a day, an
average of 11 to 14 workers report for work. There are only two midwives, namely Mrs. Laine
Andaya and Mrs. Maria Gladys Del Monde, and two nurses under the Nurse Deployment
Project of the Department of Health, namely Mrs. Ella Cayao and Mrs. Gina Jarmillo. At the
station, they conduct meetings usually on a weekly basis. Every first week of the month, they
would report to the City Health Office for the monthly meetings with all Barangay Health
Workers of all the stations.

4.2.7 Infrastructure (Barangay Hall/ Churches etc) and Educational/ Sports Facilities
Barangay Paliparan III has several structures which includes a Barangay Hall, a Market
Place, various religious and denominational churches as well as schools ranging from
Elementary to Senior High School, both public and private. The barangay also has a covered
court (basketball court) for recreation, a resort and a water park.

4.2.8 Brief History of Barangay


Paliparan, historically was a popular site because of its large space for flying kites
especially during warm seasons. Paliparan is divided into three (3) composed of Paliparan I,
Paliparan II and Paliparan III. Paliparan III is divided into three parts - Reclamation Site
(Paliparan Site), Sitio Pook and Pintong Gubat, and Mabuhay City Subdivision including
Mabuhay Annex. There is a newly developed Amalfi Subdivision which is a part of Sitio Pook.
There are also two new subdivisions that are part of Sitio Pintong-Gubat. Paliparan Site and
Mabuhay City have a total land area of 523.1396 ha; 272.1261 ha of residential area; 156.9958
ha of farmland; and 94.1977 ha of commercial land.

4.3 DESCRIPTION OF THE CURRENT COMMUNITY HEALTH SITUATION


4.3.1 Population
4.3.1.1 Total Population of the Barangay
Paliparan III is a barangay in the City of Dasmarinas, province of Cavite. Based
from the 2013 census, Paliparan III had a total population of 84,786.
