INVESTIGATION
Solving Quadratics by Factoring There are different ways to solve quadratic equations. While
graphs and tables can be used to find approximate solutions, algebraic methods can lead to
more exact solutions. The algebraic methods used to solve quadratics can vary and often
depend on the structure of the equation. As you work on the problems in this investigation,
look for answers to these questions: How can factoring a quadratic expression help in solving
a quadratic equation

Sometimes we will come across quadratic equations which are not easily
factorizable we can use the QUADRATIC FORMULA!!!

For any quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0,

Level 1-2

Identify the a, b, and c for each equation.

i. x2 + 2x + 5 = 0 a = ____ b= _____ c = ____

ii. x2 + 2x = 5 a = ____ b= _____ c = ____

Level 3-4

Identify the a, b, and c for each equation.

iii. 2x2 = 215x a = ____ b= _____ c = ____

iv. 3x2 – 2x + 9 = 0 a = ____ b= _____ c = ____

v. 144= -x2 a = ____ b= _____ c = ____

Level 5-6

Substitute the values of a,b and c in the given formula to find x.

a. x2 + 5x + 4 = 0

b. x2 – 7x = 0

c. 2x2 + 5x – 7 = 0

Level 7-8

Use two appropriate examples to verify and justify the rule.
