The overall purpose of this exercise is to prepare you for the topic you will be working for the final paper.
Submit a printed copy of this activity on October 24, 2022 during our class schedule.

NOTE: In this exercise, you prepare a concept note (short proposal) based on your chosen topic for
your term paper.

1.      A. Identify a specific economic phenomenon that you wish to investigate in your term paper. Note:
Choose an economic variable that will represent the phenomenon you wish to analyze (this will
serve as the dependent variable in your model). Then pick 3 other economic variables that are
likely to affect your chosen dependent variable (these will serve as your independent variables in
the model). Based the variables on what you have used in your term paper.

Title: A study on the Effect of Workers, Investment, and Technology on the Public Healthcare
System in the Philippines in attaining economic development.

Dependent variable: Public Healthcare System

Independent variable 1: Investment

Independent variable 2: Technology

Independent variable 3: Workers

B. What is the underlying theory behind this economic phenomenon or issues that you wish to
investigate? (State in general terms). Note: The theory should be based on the theoretical issues you
have presented in your term paper.

Healthcare is one of the important aspects a country should have in taking care of the well-
being of its citizens. If the healthcare system of a country is sufficient, this implies that there is an
economic growth which leads to the state’s economic development. Therefore, this proposal aims to
study the effect of investment, technology, and workers on the public healthcare system of the
country.

a.     Create a statement of the theory or hypothesis you want to investigate. Note: Each
independent variable should have a corresponding hypothesis or effect on the
dependent variable.

Hypothesis: Investment
Ho: Investment has no effect on the public healthcare System in the Philippines in attaining
economic development.
Ha: Investment affects the public healthcare system in the Philippines in attaining economic
development
Hypothesis: Technology
Ho: Technology has no effect on the public healthcare System in the Philippines in attaining
economic development.
Ha: Technology affects the public healthcare system in the Philippines in attaining economic
development

Hypothesis: Workers
Ho: The workers have no effect on the public healthcare System in the Philippines in
attaining economic development.
Ha: The workers affect the public healthcare System in the Philippines in attaining economic
development.

b. Specify the statistical model of the theory you want to investigate. Define each of your
variables with corresponding unit of measurement by which the variables will be
measured (e.g. Dependent variable: Currency (Y) in USD or Independent variable:
Unemployment rate (U) in %.

 Statistical Model:
Public Healthcare System = β 0 + β 1 Investement + β 2 Technology + β 3 Workers+ ε

Where:
Dependent variable: Public Healthcare System percentage (%)
Independent variable 1: Investment percentage (%)
Independent variable 2: Technology (quantitative/in numbers)
Independent variable 3: Workers (quantitative/in numbers)

c.      Discuss how you will proceed with the data collection for this study in terms of:

Location of the study: The location of the study will focus in the Philippines
Type of data to be collected: Statistical Type of Data
Is it primary or secondary data? The data will be in secondary data

Explain why your study needs a cross-section or timeseries data? Focus your justification on the
measurement of the variables in your model.

There is a need for a cross-section or timeseries data for this study because the factors affecting the public
healthcare system in the country might change or not change yearly. There are also instances wherein
technology especially in rural areas are not advanced due to lack of investment (not changing yearly). On
the other hand, the number of workers change yearly because of the fact that some healthcare workers
prefer more to work abroad because of high compensation and incentives.
