DETAILS?
Noting details is a brief record of something that one
has written down on paper

This may be a statement, a quote, a definition or a


phrase one may have written down in order to
remember

Noting Details is a reading comprehension skill that


involves picking out from a text a particular piece
or pieces of information to achieve a given purpose
such as answering all question in a test.

When one note details, he keeps a brief record of
something on a piece of paper.

text or story read

Noting details provide us the opportunity to


assimilate new textual information with their existing
background knowledge and prior experiences to
expand their schema.

Whenever you are reading, you should be constantly
noting the important details. When discussing
reading comprehension, think of details as the
individual features, facts or particulars in text. These
details are essential to develop reading
comprehension.

Supporting details help readers answer questions
they have about the topic or main idea. A writer may
use examples, statistics, anecdotes, (short,
interesting stories), definitions, comparisons, or other
forms of support to explain a reading's topic or main
ideas

Example:

Homeless people have many problems. In winter, it's


hard to stay warm and it gets too hot in summer. It's
also hard to keep things safe without a home. Worst
is the lack of privacy.

The supporting details are in bold. There are THREE


points to support the topic sentence/main idea.

Example:

Having a pet can be good for your health. A pet can be


good company. It gives you something to focus on
besides yourself. Studies have shown that having a
pet can also reduce stress.

Protecting the rain forest is very important. Many life-


saving medicines come from plants that grow in the
rain forest. Most species that live on land make their
homes there. The rain forest also helps to keep our
air clean.

A paragraph contains facts, statements, examples-
specifics which guide us to a full understanding of
the main idea.

They clarify, illuminate, explain, describe, expand


and illustrate the main idea and are supporting
details.
