The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly


multilingual and interdisciplinary character. It is a modern institution with a personal
atmosphere, situated in a country at the heart of Europe and close to the European ins-
titutions, innovative companies and the Luxembourg financial centre. Founded in 2003
as Luxembourg’s first and only public university, it already has a reputation as one of the
best young universities in the world.

Even though Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries


in the world, it is an internationally important economic
and financial hub and the richest country in Europe.7 It is
a founding member of the European Union, the Organisa-
tion for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD),
the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisa-
tion (NATO) and the Benelux.

CITY IN THE WORLD

The country’s capital, Luxembourg City, is one of the of-


ficial capitals of the European Union (EU), together with
Brussels and Strasbourg. It hosts the European Court of
Justice, the EU’s highest court. It is the first and only city
in Europe to be named as “European Capital of Culture”
on two occasions. In 2019, Luxembourg was ranked as
the safest capital city in the world.8
