Our Students
We are a small, but growing, institution with approximately 130 students on both part-time and full-time programmes. We have a small proportion of international students, however the majority of our students are from the Isle of Man. There is no such thing as a typical student at The IBS since we attract people at very different stages of their lives and careers. Every year we attract a proportion of the Islands secondary school leavers. The Isle of Man International Business School is one of the most popular choices for Manx School leavers. We are also pleased to see an increasing number of mature students (aged 21+) registering with us too. Part time, mature students on our undergraduate programmes are able to benefit from being able to juggle their studies around work and family life commitments; whilst our postgraduate programmes justifiably attract high achievers from the world of business, some local and some international. All of our students have chosen the Isle of Man International Business School due to its high academic standards, the excellent level of student support on offer and the benefits of networking with other like-minded professionals.
We also have a hard copy library, which contains copies of all the core text books required for the programmes taught at the school. Text books may even be provided to individual students on some programmes and our students are also entitled to use the library facilities at the Isle of Man College.
Homestay Accommodation
We do not currently offer student accommodation, but instead we are able to put international students in contact with local families or individuals who are prepared to offer Homestay accommodation.
Small Classes
Our class sizes are much smaller than you would expect to find at a UK university. We offer a very personalised and supportive environment where our students have constant access to our academic staff - all experienced industry specialists with experience of teaching in prestigious higher education institutions worldwide.
Student Support
We operate a personal tutor system for academic support and a Student Liaison Officer for students to contact for advice on any other personal matters. Our students can also contact the Student Welfare Officers at the Isle of Man College.
Learning Resources
Throughout higher and professional education, much research is now conducted via the Internet and by consulting electronic papers and journals. We have two I.T. suites and broadband internet access throughout, for our students to use. Students on our degree programmes are given access to the online learning resources of Liverpool John Moores University (our academic partner), and can freely access a wide range of databases and information sources, online data services and the web.
Student Finance
Tuition fees apply to the majority of programmes offered at The IBS, but depending on your individual circumstances, there may be financial assistance available from one or more sources: If you are self-funding your chosen programme then it is possible to pay yearly fees by instalments in September, December and May. If you have been resident in the Isle of Man for a minimum of 3 years prior to the start of a degree programme at The IBS, you may be eligible for financial support from the Isle of Man Department of Education, Student Awards Section. The Isle of Man Department of Trade and Industry offers a number of grants and financial support to businesses and individuals who are paying for vocational training. Look out for the DTI logo on our Professional and Corporate Programmes pages for courses that may be financially supported by the DTI. Tax relief may be available from the Isle of Man Government Income Tax Division if you pay for your own vocational training.
Enquiries + Applications
As the Isle of Man International Business School is not a UK-based university, we are not part of the UCAS system (which processes applications for degree programmes at universities and colleges in the United Kingdom). Professional Qualifications
In addition to offering a number of academic degree programmes, The IBS also lends itself perfectly to being a centre for high-level professional qualifications and training. There are two types of professional programme that we currently offer: 1. Firstly, there are those that are delivered and assessed by our own staff - such as qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Chartered Management Institute. The Isle of Man Department of Trade and Industry has agreed to offer support to local students of IBS professional programmes (CIM & CMI). This can be up to 50% of the published fees. This support should be applied for directly with the DTI and usually consists of a reimbursement on production of a fees paid receipt. Please contact Andy Stewart, DTI Training Services Manager on Tel: 682354 for further information. Whichever type of professional programme you opt for, you can be assured that The IBS will provide peaceful surroundings and spacious, comfortable facilities in order that your student experience is a positive one.
2. Secondly, there are programmes that are delivered by external parties. For these programmes, external training providers simply hire rooms from us and periodically send staff across to the Island to deliver training. CMI and CIM programmes are delivered as Part Day Release. This means that you will need to arrange one afternoon per week off work during term times. Typically the programmes will run between 1pm and 8pm.
They can be taken as specific stand alone qualifications, or as a progressive set of qualifications. Each qualification takes a minimum of 1 academic year (30 weeks) to complete via part-time study, with programmes commencing in September and ending in June. (The IBS does not currently provide tuition for students studying for the Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing, however, exam revision sessions for this qualification may be delivered subject to demand. Please register your interest with The IBS.)

IBS Consulting
IBS Consulting is a division of the Isle of Man International Business School that provides Management Consultancy support to organisations in the Isle of Man and Europe. Its aim is to help your business achieve outstanding results through excellence in process design and organisation and in your service to customers. We will only recommend solutions that we can help you to implement successfully and will work closely with your staff to ensure that they are trained in any new ways of working. This fresh approach to consulting means you can fully benefit from our expertise, whilst implementing a lasting solution that can be managed by your people (and will continue to improve your business) long after we've gone. Delivering the service your customers expect requires an understanding of the points at which they interact with your business and knowing what they expect from each interaction. We will help you to become more reliable in these interactions and so deliver customer service more consistently - every time and everywhere in your business. We can also help you to determine the true cost and profitability of service to your customers. By integrating data from multiple sources, we can give you a more comprehensive view of all your customer interactions, service costs and profit levels. This will ensure more effective customer value management and segmentation and so increase your profitability. Operational excellence is at the heart of what we do. Manufacturing organisations have been profiting from lean manufacturing and supply-chain improvements for years - and forward-thinking service organisations are now starting to apply these techniques to achieve similar benefits. Our expertise in operational matters will help you to get a leaner, more efficient back office; to more profitably manage your production process/ supply chain; to make your internal processes more streamlined, flexible and effective; and to increase your sales revenue and reduce your operating costs through the application of appropriate e-business techniques. Peter has over 15 years consulting experience, managing business transformation programmes for multi-national clients in Europe, the USA and more recently the Isle of Man. He established the USA operation of a UK Consulting Practice in 1994 and spent 8 years in America developing and managing large-scale supply chain and change management projects for technology, pharmaceutical and manufacturing organisations such as Microsoft, Dell and Pfizer. Peter has delivered many of IBS Consultings Business Improvement Workshops to a number of leading multinational companies including Microsoft, Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Avery Dennison and Rolls Royce. On the Isle of Man, Peter has so far worked on projects for the Isle of Man Department of Trade and Industry, Police and ISD/Treasury; Royal Skandia and Clerical Medical. Peter has a BSc in Manufacturing Engineering and an MBA from Manchester Business School.
29
Executive Education
As an extension to our consultancy activities, Peter Ginty along with a range of associate consultants, has devised a series of short courses known collectively as Executive Education. Typically these last between 2 and 5 days and can be run as open programmes which anybody can attend or as in house programmes where an organisation will ask The IBS to tailor a programme for its own staff to privately attend. All delegates who complete an IBS Executive Education course will receive a CPD certificate. Furthermore, as an accredited Study Centre of both the Chartered Management Institute and Chartered Institute of Marketing, we will endeavour to formally accredit any course undertaken at The IBS should you or your organisation desire this. The following are examples of programmes that run several times per year. Our website holds up to date information about forthcoming Executive Education: www.ibs.ac.im/courses/professional
Managing Change
Split in to a 2-day Overview and 3-day Workshop, this course integrates a hard, systems-oriented approach to organisational change with the softer, more people-focused aspects of change. It will explore a Change Management Framework which considers operational and process improvement considerations in conjunction with methods for motivating and supporting your staff. The aim: to help you implement the organisational and cultural changes your business needs to survive and prosper.
