NEW SYSTEM FOR AIR PURIFICATION

As you all know, air quality continues to be

a concern in Delhi. VVS parents took a good
first step in equipping the classrooms with
air purifiers in 2017. When we did this, we
understood that there were certain challenges in
purifying the air in our classrooms.

The best we can do with the Sharp air purifiers

is a 50% reduction in PM levels. The reason we
can’t get better is that we need to open windows
to ventilate and balance CO2 levels.

A new technology and machine has presented

itself, which has been tried and tested over
two years in some parents’ homes and offices.
They have been successfully installed in some
schools and many bluechip companies like
Nestle/ McKinsey.

These machines are based on a new patented

technology developed specifically for Indian
conditions by IIT techs. They create a positive air
pressure system that cleans outside air through
multiple micropore filters and keep pumping this
filtered oxygenated air indoors. This creates a
clean air pocket indoors (CAP).

In independent testing by the vendor, the

accumulation of bioaerosol (virus/ bacteria/ dust
/toxins) in indoor spaces with these machines is
found to be reduced by 90%.

Since the results have been very encouraging,

we proposed a trial in two VVS classrooms. The
values in this week show a significant reduction
in PM counts and Co2 levels compared to the
baseline.

TESTING IN 2 VVS CLASSROOMS
Monday, 9th Jan - Comparison of PM 2.5 & Co2 between a Junior classroom
with the test Machine (CAP) and adjacent classroom with Sharps (non-CAP)
RK PURAM on 9th, 3:00 PM - AQI- 520; PM 2.5- 520 ug/m3; PM 10 - 505 ug/m3

• PM counts were lower than 30ug/m3 and Co2 was under 1000 in
both test classrooms in Junior & Senior school over the week. Co2
values under 1000 are very good and meet international standards.
• In comparison, the Sharp machines lowered PM count by 50% of
the outside; around 150 on average. CO2 was nearing 2000 on a few
occasions when the class was full, which is poor & unhealthy.
• These machines lowered PM 2.5/ PM 10 AND brought down Co2.
• There was minimal change in air quality with the doors opening and
closing as observed in both classrooms.
• They can provide AQI at WHO quality (PM counts less than 15 ug/
m3) not only in the winter, but also in the summer months when it is
200+ outdoors. Effectively they can run throughout the school year.
• These machines can provide some level of cooling in the summer as
there will be constant air flow (similar to an overhead fan).
• In the winters, in-built temperature controls within the machine will
ensure filtered air entering the classrooms is at neutral temperature.
• The machines are energy efficient, not noisy and unobstrusive.

1. How much is the machine?

We have negotiated a special price for these machines. For VVS, the cost is
Rs 100,300 per classroom (including 18% GST). This includes the machine and
AMC valid for 1 year.
2. What is the cost of the yearly AMC, and is there a warranty?
Rs. 11,800 a machine (including 18% GST) after 1 year which includes the
replacement filters and monthly visits/ cleaning of filters/ calibration / servicing etc.
This includes a 3 year complete product warranty; and a 10 year continued service
under AMC.
3. Have we taken comparative quotes?
This product is custom built and the latest technology. There is no other similar
vendor, except for the pricier IQair. VVS parents who have installed this system in
their homes/ offices have paid 25% more than this price.
4. What will happen to the existing Sharps?
For the time being they will be redeployed in other areas in school- Offices, labs,
libraries, OT/ music /dance rooms - rooms that are less densely occupied and
therefore do not struggle with CO2. Eventually at phase 2, the parent body may
collectively decide to migrate entirely to the new system and retire the purifiers.
5. What is the ask?
We need 44 machines. If we crowdfund at Rs 6000 a student, we would need
735 donors, 53 parents per batch.
6. How can you contribute?
Please message your class rep if you can contribute the required amount. Payment
will be to the vendors QR code directly. If you would like to / are able to contribute
more than Rs 6000, please message one of the 3 parents below so that we can
contact you in case we need to meet a shortfall.
