Evaluation

How well did you show the topic in your production?

For my topic, I chose to do fantasy because you can have an extremely different idea which
couldn’t be created on scene but in a radio drama, as you cannot see what you are listening
to. I had two topics in mind, thriller and fantasy – I had a huge mind block because I couldn’t
think of a story which would have a good conflict and cliff hanger. I finally thought of a great
idea of using the Bermuda triangle and the conspiracy theories behind it to my advantage
and make a fantasy story from that part of the ocean. In my survey, people said that felt
touched from the characters of Zalli and Katlyn as they were in dangerous in the plane; they
felt the tension of their situation and the person who said this understood what was
happening in the drama. I think that the topic of fantasy was well shown because at 4.10 in
the production it sounds like a monster and at 4.20 Katlyn say that ‘it’s an octopus’ which
show that’s its fantasy because nothing can make that big roar noise and Zalli and Katlyn
both said the octopus was huge and was grabbing hold of the plane – explaining that the
octopus is fictional and is not real. I am very glad that I chose fantasy over thriller and that I
created a good storyline for my production which made me happy and excited to make,
record and produce this project as I think my storyline is very good. Compared to other
radio dramas, I think I created conflict twice whereas others didn’t because I made a climax
straight away to get across that there’s lots of tension in my drama, and then after I added a
small cliff hanger which later on I resolved at 4.20 and people understood why at the
beginning Daniel was so scared and was crashing.

What were my production strengths?

Overall, I think my strengths in my productions were my Foley sounds and my research I did
to create a good piece; I researched how to create different sounds which I would need to
get from YouTube – I tried to recreate and record thunder, water splashing and aeroplane
noises from inside and outside (this helped really well as I went on a plane a few days before
so I could record some good sounds of the plane taking off, flying and outside noises of the
plane). I researched the conspiracy theories about the Bermuda triangle and watched
YouTube’s on peoples’ journeys through the Bermuda Triangle, and I watched some movies
such as the meg to get ideas for my production and how I should portray my drama and
how the storyline should be laid out and written. From my survey, 66.7% of the people who
answered my survey said that my Foley sounds worked well and the layering in my
production was well thought out with all the foley sounds that I created by myself and used
no-copyright YouTube sounds. My teachers liked how I interrupted my production with two
climaxes and cliff hangers and how it planned out with the story line from the script.
Another strength in my production was auditioning the right cast for my radio drama,
because I did many interviews for my drama trying to find the right actors for my production
– I’m glad I did a few more interviews to find the right person to act in my drama, when the
day came to record I did have to find a new actor for Daniel as my actor couldn’t come in for
the time, so luckily I got Emmy to act and the scene went really well and I’m glad I changed
it to her. I believe I had a lot of strengths in my production and I am happy that the editing,
auditioning and recording went so well and there weren’t many things that went wrong
within the process of my radio drama.
What were my weakness in my production?
I agree that I had a few weaknesses in my production, which I thought was good because in
my next production I can make correct and recreate a better piece in the future. Some of my
weakness was mostly the foley sounds volume and the how the audio was portrayed in my
radio drama; I also think that a small weakness in editing my production was the layering
and finding how to make the audio better by editing the sound itself. I think that these
weaknesses have occurred because I wanted the foley sounds to be loud as if you were
really there, however I think I made the sounds too loud so you can’t hear the audio very
well and my classmates did think that it was too loud for their ears to cope with – on my
survey my class mates did give me constructive criticism as the volume of the audio and the
foley sounds were too loud for the production. Most people said I put in the foley sounds
well and made sense to the location to where the characters are and what’s going on.
However, people said that the foley sounds were a little loud and it was hard to hear the
audio. If I were to do this project again I would make sure that the dialogue is heard in both
ears and you can hear it over the foley sounds so the sounds aren't overbearing.

Did you meet your goals?

I think I met my goals as I layered a load of sounds very well and you still understood which
each foley sound was which and understood the location of the scenes. I also think I
followed the storyline that I researched and I understood how to research how to create my
storyline by watching movies with similar climaxes and storyline, watching YouTube clips on
the Bermuda triangle and finding out how to create a fantasy which could possibly sound
real within reason. I believe I met my goals effectively with the audio sounding very
dramatic and terrifying which my teachers both thought I brought into my production vastly
suitably – I also reflect that my foley sounds I made went perfect in the way that I went on a
plane a few days before I was recording and editing which was extremely helpful as I
needed some plane sounds for my radio drama and I didn’t want to use YouTube sounds as
it would have lowered my grade. The things I could have improved on is the volume of my
drama making sure it wasn’t too loud for people to hear and making sure you can hear the
audio without having the increase the volume to hear it by having the foley sounds
traumatising your ears. I am not very good at creating quite long projects after 5 minutes
because I make my filming/recording quite quick and I edit the clips to become quite quick
in pace, therefore I need to see if I can slow down my timings and recording of audio to
create a longer production but not too slow to make the production or radio drama boring
within the timings of the editing.

Self-evaluation
I consider that I did a good job with my radio drama because I thought it was a good idea
and that I could create a good piece in which is understandable but also climaxing to make
the audience feel the tension. Some of my strength are finding the sounds to make my
production become well thought out and to not make it too much to hear. I need to develop
the volume of production and make the audio sound to come out of both ears instead of
just one ear. Compared to my last production I believe I did better in this project because I
made this project more exciting as I like this project more compared to my last production –
I think. I researched more this project and understood what to do with the editing more – I
think this because I had to focus on the audio alone without watching anything which made
it easier for me to understand how to create my piece.
