Assignment 2

Lesson 2. Business environments

Mexico has already signed a free-trade agreement with the European Union, but we still
have a significant trade deficit with that economic bloc. What kind of opportunities are
Mexican businesses missing there?
-Check the following web tool: Practical guide to doing business in Europe

-Browse along and find the requisites for imported goods into the European Union
regarding consumer guarantees; take note of those imposed by Sweden and Finland.

Importing to Finlad:
Finald applies the European Union measures related to imports and exports, applies EU
customs laws and regulations, as well as common customs tariffs from the US and other
non-Eu countries. Duties and other import tazas are levied on the customs value of the
goods at the point of importation. The customs value is based on the transaction value of
the goods imported.

In Finland general consumer goods must not mean danger to the health or property of
anyone. General safety requirements for consumer products and services are laid down in
the Consumer Safety Act. It is a general act that is not applied when other legislation
contains provisions on the safety of specific consumer products or services. However, if a
product is labeled under general consumer goods but contains for example electrical or
pressure features, both the consumer safety act and special legislation can be applied.

Importing to Swede:
In Sweden like Finland applies the EU customs laws and coherent regulations, as well as
common customs tariffs from the US and other non-EU countries. Most industrial products
imported to Sweden are subjects to customs duty. Duty rates for foodstuffs can be higher as
they based on the weight of the commodity. The value for customs purposes is directly
based on the value of transaction: product price, transportation and insurance.
Importers can apply for reduced customs duty or exemption if the goods originate from a
country with which EU has a free trade agreement or in the case of:
-Temporary importation (example testing or exhibiting purposes)
-Inward processing when a product is imported in order to be processed further, repacked
and re-exported
-Scientific instruments imports

-Look for three Mexican companies from different industries that could export to
these two countries and justify your selection.

Company 1: Café Punta del Cielo

This is a Mexican company dedicated to the production, sale and distribution of gourmet
and organic coffee from the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Nayarit and Veracruz. The form of
distribution is carried out through sale of coffee prepared in the establishment, sale of
ground coffee or beans, either canned or in pods and marketed in stores, sales of high-
performance coffee makers.

Company 2: Tequila Jose Cuervo

Considering that in Sweden and Finland apply EU’s custom laws and coherent regulations
and recently I read in a article that in European Union represents around 10% of Jose
Cuervo’s sales and that the sales team are planning a strategy to conquer more European
territory, so I think this new agreement and these regulations may help the company to
achieve their purpose.

Its production process guarantees a coffee free of fertilizers and chemicals that damage the
environment. This company fits perfectly in Finland, the coffee consumption there is
averaging 9.3 kilograms of roasted coffee per person (2020) and over the past decade the
average coffee consumption per person stayed steadily around 10 kilograms each year.
Finland ranks among the world’s top coffee consuming nations per capita.

Company 3: Beer factory & food

Beer Factory & Food was awarded the gold medal in the Mexican cup of beers. This
recognition is granted for getting more medals in different varieties of the competition. This
makes it one of the best craft beers in Mexico.

This Russian Imperial style beer has 10 degrees of alcohol and intense notes of coffee,
chocolate and smoke. Very well contrasted to taste the balance between the bitterness of the
hops and the characteristics of the malt.
Beer Factory was born 20 years ago and was the first restaurant in Mexico with its own
micro-brewery. The idea was very innovative at the time. 20 years later, offering the best
service, they continue to reinvent themselves every day to attract new audiences.

I began to investigate the consumption of beer in both countries and the potential market
would be Sweden because since 2016 this country prefers craft beer, which has led many
brands to position themselves in the market.

-Write three memos addressed to the CEO of each company regarding applicable

consumer guarantees and the additional services they must offer and comply with. Be
concise.

Company 1

From: Maria Fernanda Navarro Mozqueda
Subjetc: Time to expand the market to the European Union
The purpose of this is to present you an opportunity to expand your brand in Europe and
also let the world know the beautiful and amazing things that Mexico can provide to other
countries around the world.

I did a research about the coffee consumption in Europe and found out that Finland might
be a potencial market for you to explore, there is stats that says that the coffee consumption
there is averaging 9.3 kilograms of roasted coffee per person (2020) making Finland one of
the world’s top coffee consumers and also making it a potencial market to export your
brand. Thanks to the renegotiation and consumer guarantees were simplified in order to
avoid making the process longer and tedious, don’t worry about Finland using different
regulations, they work with the same as the EU.

Any comments or questions I am at your service.

Best regards!

Company 2
To: Jose Cuervo Company
From: Maria Fernanda Navarro Mozqueda
Subjetc: Useful important information for future decisions

The following summery is an analysis about the benefits of keeping Jose Cuervo brand in
the European Union, benefits that might help the company to conquer more European
territory:

I’ve found stats about tequila consumption in the European Union that might be important
for you. The demand for tequila in the region grew at av average annual rate of 2.8% in the
last five years and the best thing is that it is expected that this demand grows in the
following years. Thanks to the new agreement between EU and Mexico the designation of
origin of tequila was protectec and it was sought to enhance its presence in the European
Union.

We know that this company is currently exporting tequila to member countries of the EU
and I saw that you’re planning to explore other destinations so I invite you to consider
Finland and Sweden as export destinations for the increase of income in relation to export
costs. Don’t worry about custom laws, regulations or consumer guarantees because Sweden
and Finland work hand in hand with the EU’s laws and regulations.

Anny comments or questions I am at your service.

Best regards!

Company 3
To: Beer Factory & Food
From: Maria Fernanda Navarro Mozqueda
Subjetc: A big opportunity to conquer the European Union

The following message is to help your brand to expand to potential markets in Europe,
since I was in an article that you were planning to expand to Europe.

My suggestion is to explore Sweden, they love craft beer ever since craft beer trend back in
2016, the number of brands exporting their beers to Sweden have been massive, an advice
that might help you know better the market is to attend a beer trade fair because it gives a
good understanding of trends and tastes. The regulations consumer guarantees and custom
laws from Finland works in harmony with the European Union so don’t worry about a
specific research in those topics.

Let me know if there is any question I can gladly help you out.
Best regards!
