Urinary catheriazation

I need to insert the catheter to monitor urine output this involve inserting small flexible tube into your
penis to reach to the bladder/ it might be a lit bit unconfrotable but its shouldn’t be painful/ I’ll insert
local anasesthetic into the penis to make the procedure as comfortable as possible

Have you ever been allergic to local anaesthetic

I would like you to take your lower half clothing off including your underware for me and cover with the
blanket we provided

I will get a member of nursing stuff to chaperone me throughout the examination

Dose that sound good for you

Wash hand / wear apron / gather equitment ( check experiry date)

Expose the patient

Wear glove

Place absorbant paper under the patient

Clean the area surrounding the uretheral meatus and direction should be away from the meatus

Discard glove and wash hand again and wear new pair of glove

Drape the area surrounding the penis

I am going to inset local anaesthetic now it might sting a little bit sting but it should go numb quickly

Allow 5 min for LA to take effect

Place sterile reciver below the penis

Open cather and ensure not to touch the tip of catheter

Grab the penis to prevent the catheter from sliding back out / Insert the catherter gently

Pull back the wrap to expose more of the catheter and insert more till fully insert

Inflate ballon with the water filled syringe

Let me know if there any pain

Observe any sign of discomfort

Gently retract until resistant is felt and replace the foreskin if appropriate

Attach cather bag and place the catheter below the level of patient
Clean up the patient and discard all the equitment

Recover the patient to preserve dignity

Wash hands

To complete the procedure I will fill out all relevant documentation making sure to note

Urine colour / residual urine volume and any complication
