Introduction

Typical metal frame construction provides poor performance. This

should not be the case.
This eBook illustrates how we can transform the metal framing
approach into a high-performance Smart Enclosure. The Smart
Enclosure System is a 21st-century guide to advanced high-
performance building assemblies. The System is a toolkit that can
help you maximize the positive impact of your building projects:
providing optimized comfort, safety, energy efficiency, and negative
carbon emissions.
The Smart Enclosure System lays out a new framework of decision
making consisting of seven overarching principles and three tiers
of assembly performance. This framework is customized for nine
different assembly types. We’ve put these tools in place to help
architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, building owners,
and other building professionals make smarter, more intentional
choices in their material selection and design process that can
improve the lives of building occupants and our biosphere
Continuous insulation is a common first step to greater efficiency
and sustainability, but today we need to be more aggressive and
see each new building as an opportunity to help fight climate
change.

MAKING METAL FRAME CONSTRUCTION HIGH PERFORMANCE

A Brief History
Light gauge metal framing studs are cold-formed by guiding thin sheets
of steel through a series of rollers to bend the shapes familiar to us on the
construction site. While originating in the late 1800s the first documented
use of cold-formed steel (CFS) as building framing was at the Virginia
Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia in about 1925, as a floor system
supported by masonry walls.
Then at the 1933 Chicago Century of Progress Exposition, the “home of
the future” exhibit homes were extensively or completely framed with CFS,
including the Good Housekeeping-Stran-Steel House. The official program
of the fair stated about CFS: “the genius of man has provided factory-
made parts, wall materials pre-fabricated in shops, steel frames and clips
and screws for quick assembly, and new compositions, all to permit the
building of staunch structures…”
In 1946 the American Iron and Steel Institute published “Specification for
the Design of Light Gage Steel Structural Members”, based on research
done at Cornell University starting in 1939. Post-WWII, there were attempts
to make steel framing standard for residential construction but it was in
commercial construction where it became a mainstream approach - where
lightweight non-combustible materials were more valued.
In the 1950s and 1960s, with the demand for taller buildings, where the
light-weight and non-combustible characteristics were sought, metal
framing became commonplace in commercial construction.
Today it’s estimated that between 30 and 35 percent of all nonresidential
buildings in the US are built with cold-formed steel framing.

Concerns with Metal Framing

There are a number of concerns with metal framing that make it a less
desirable approach than wood.
First, are its carbon emissions and lack of carbon sequestration. The
embodied energy of metal framing can be quite high because of the steel
manufacturing process. And while anywhere from one-third to two-thirds
of steel framing is typically from recycled content, which helps lower the
environmental and climate impact, the embodied carbon remains far
too high. To compound the problem, metal has no carbon sequestration
capability in itself.
Second, regarding thermal performance, metal framing is often riddled with
thermal bridges that degrade the assembly insulations’ value by 50% or
more. The increase in thermal bridging brings greater concern for moisture
and damages such as rusting fasteners and components.
Both of these reasons are serious enough, to give any professional pause,
before choosing metal framing over wood.

3 Metal Frame Smart Enclosure System

MAKING METAL FRAME CONSTRUCTION HIGH PERFORMANCE

Vapor & Air Control Transform Assemblies

Vapor control is important to avoid moisture damage - particularly in
superinsulated enclosures that have outboard sheathing, because the
sheathing is a potential condensing surface. Therefore we should minimize
the intrusion of moist conditioned air into the enclosure by providing
inboard vapor and air control. The best vapor control is provided by
smart vapor retarding membranes such as INTELLO PLUS, INTELLO X PRO CLIMA
and DB+ from Pro Clima. These inboard membranes prevent wetting of full structure vapor and air control system
the enclosure in the winter and allow drying to the interior in the summer,
building drying capacity and resilience. The membranes also provide
airtightness, preventing wetting from vapor carried by airflow.
Lower moisture risks further by eliminating the exterior sheathing, and
go “sheathingless”, while utilizing cross-bracing for structural racking
resistance.
Airtightness disproportionately affects an enclosure’s thermal
PRO CLIMA
performance. A well-insulated enclosure that is airtight can have five
interior vapor and air control system
times less energy loss when compared to the same insulated enclosure
that is leaky. Airtightness is essential to optimizing the insulation
performance. Today building codes are adopting mandatory levels of
airtightness, typically requiring 3 ACH50. But with attention to detail, careful
material selection, and proper sequencing, and practice, Passive House
performance of 0.6 ACH50 is readily achievable. When you provide greater
airtightness, you provide greater comfort, resilience, and cost savings,
essentially for free.
PRO CLIMA
exterior vapor and air control system
Blower Door Testing
Because airtightness is fundamental to building performance, whether
you’re building a smart enclosure or a dumb enclosure, like every car
must be inspected, every building you build should be blower door tested.
Pressurize and depressurize, find the leaks, and make the enclosure tighter.
If you can increase airtightness you’ll increase occupant comfort and save
more money. With each building and test, the team will be better attuned
to how to make airtightness part of their routine. Don’t skip it. Buy a blower
door and use it on every project (and as often as needed to get <1CH50
or better). See blower door systems by Retrotec (www.retrotec.com) and
Minneapolis Blower Door (www.energyconservatory.com). BLOWER DOOR TEST
Airtightness testing at site

Insulation
Because metal framing is inherently full of thermal bridges, continuous,
thermal-bridge-free insulation is a must, providing predictable performance
and protection. Whether or not your building code requires continuous
insulation, common sense does. Often, continuous insulation leads one
to think of board insulation wrapping the outside of the structure but in
the case of double-stud construction, the continuous layer of insulation is
embedded in the framing itself - in the gap provided between the interior
and outboard studs that form the wall. The gap size and resulting insulation
levels are up to you.
Wall cavity insulation can be used - but the effective R-value is reduced
by approximately 50% due to conductivity of the metal studs - but in tight
urban settings it can be worthwhile.

Gutex Wood Fiber Insulation: A Carbon Solution on

Day One
Because climate change is fast becoming an existential threat, we can’t
afford to throw on counterproductive pounds of up-front emissions, also
called embodied carbon.
You have choices going forward. You can choose board insulations that
initially add to the problem such as XPS, EPS, and mineral wool, or you can
choose a board insulation that moves you to your goal on day one, such as
MULTITHERM wood fiberboard made by Gutex.

GUTEX
raw material sustainably harvested from
the Black Forest

(based on m2 of board material with R29 equivalent thermal resistance)

As the graph above illustrates, fossil fuel and stone based insulations pack
on the pounds - adding significant upfront emissions in their life cycle.
Standing apart from the crowd is Gutex, which manufactures wood fiber
insulation products such as MULTITHERM - a tongue and groove insulation
board that can perform as both an exterior, vapor open insulation and WRB
in one. Also available are: board insulations ULTRATHERM, THERMOSAFE
WD, and THERMOWALL; batt insulation, THERMOFLEX; and dense-pack
insulation, THERMOFIBER. Gutex delivers the goal of negative carbon
GUTEX
emissions on its first day on the job, and it allows your project to stay wood fiberboard, batt and dense-pack
carbon negative and provide the best impact. insulations
But the benefits of Gutex wood fiber insulation just start with carbon. It’s
a great acoustic insulator. It’s moisture buffering capabilities are excellent.
It’s workability, without itch or skin irritation, is superior to mineral wool
and fiberglass. For the chemically sensitive the wood fiber dense-pack
contents, in contrast to most cellulose, are fully knowable and known
(100% wood fiber - no plastics, printing inks etc.). And at the end of its life,
it’s compostable.

Havelock Wool
Like wood fiber insulation, Havelock Wool has a dizzying array of benefits.
It’s all natural, and isn’t a skin irritant. It’s a carbon sink. It not only has no
VOCs but acts as an air filter. The low density and light weight make it an
ideal insulation for prefabricated panels.

Daylighting
Daylighting is critically important for building aesthetics, as well as for our
health and well being. Historically daylight units have performed poorly,

Ventilation
We can no longer install exhaust-only ventilation systems. They
suck conditioned air out of buildings and consequently introduce
unconditioned air that is supplied through random cracks in the
envelope. The result is poor air quality, discomfort, and wasted LUNOS e2
energy. The solution is to provide low volume, continuous, balanced heat recovery ventilation unit
ventilation that utilizes a high-efficiency heat exchange core. In the US,
475 offers a unique high-performance, ventilation solution: ductless,
decentralized, through-wall ventilation systems manufactured by Lunos
that provide superior energy efficiency and air quality. The Lunos e2
and eGO systems enable you to provide optimal ventilation without
running ductwork throughout the interior walls and ceilings. LUNOS ego

Passive House
Passive House has rightly been identified as the best tool we have
today to cause dramatic reductions of building energy use - reductions
proportional to what the climate crisis demands - while maintaining,
and even improving, the quality of life of occupants.
What underlies Passive House is not the science of megawatts or
technological breakthroughs, but human comfort. (We don’t need
technological breakthroughs to solve the climate crisis!)
Passive House focuses on human comfort not primarily through
technological systems but by optimizing the building structure itself.
Passive House doesn’t look to power first to solve problems, but the
passive construction elements. Power will be needed to heat and PASSIVE PRINCIPLES

MAKING METAL FRAME CONSTRUCTION HIGH PERFORMANCE
Passive House empowers the architect’s design, and the builder’s skill
to embed a high level of energy efficiency and performance in the
structure itself: the massing, the orientation, continuous thermal bridge
free insulation, integrated windows and shading and so on.
Passive House is basic building science rigorously applied and
optimized. Using the Passive House methodology, we can reduce
heating and cooling energy demand by up to 90%, and overall energy
demand by up to 75% in new buildings and in retrofits of existing
buildings.
Passive House was first developed by Bo Adamson and Wolfgang Feist,
and formalized and expanded upon by the Passive House Institute, in
Darmstadt, Germany. Today, this methodology is being successfully
applied to practically every construction type, building typology,
occupancy type, region and climate. The only limit is our imagination.
By employing Passive House, we can start to realistically reconcile our
building operations and climate mitigation goals.
The Smart Enclosure has Passive House embedded in it. You can make
a Smart Enclosure without making a Passive House - but it helps.

8.1 FLOORS
The ground connection of metal frame construction can be of any
of the typical configurations: slab-on-grade, unconditioned cellar
or crawlspace, and conditioned cellar or crawlspace.

Airtightness
The inboard air control layer is the primary air barrier and is
typically the subfloor sheathing or concrete. The sheathing is
taped and care must be taken to connect to the inboard wall air
control membrane. At unconditioned cellars or crawl spaces, the
outboard airtightness is typically a SOLITEX membrane outboard
of the insulation.
Vapor Control
For slab-on-grade, heavy duty vapor-closed plastic is
recommended. At the floor structure above an unconditioned
crawl space or cellar, the subfloor sheathing acts as the vapor
retarder. Membranes outboard of the insulation or sheathing
should typically be either vapor open or moderately retarding,
maintaining the ability of the assembly to dry outward.
Insulation
Below slab-on-grade GLAVEL foam glass gravel and mineral wool
boards are now available – avoiding the need for EPS or XPS
insulation. Above slab insulation use GUTEX wood fiber insulation
boards.
Continuity
Like all high-performance construction, continuity of the control
layers is critical. This is particularly true at the connections
between the parts – in this case, between the wall and the floor.

8.2 WALLS
Walls are perhaps the most deceptive part of this building
enclosure – as we are talking about “typical” metal frame
construction. But expect extraordinary performance, even Passive
House level performance. While the insulation levels will vary
based on building code requirements and performance goals,
the basic wall framing approach is little different from typical
techniques.
What is different is the complete integration and continuity of the
system that minimizes thermal bridging and provides the highest
levels of airtightness. Whether code requires it or not, or whether
it is Tier 1, 2 or 3 - we want a continuous layer of Gutex wood
fiberboard insulation outboard of the sheathing or framing. How
thick? That depends on climate and goals.
For Tier 2 improvement, remove the sheathing and replace with
cross bracing. And for Tier 3 move all the insulation outboard.
Inboard airtightness and vapor control and outboard airtightness/
windtightness with back-vented rain screens and careful
integration of all penetrations will complete the approach.
Airtightness
The inboard air control layer, INTELLO X or INTELLO PLUS, is
the primary air barrier and is typically connected to the subfloor
sheathing or concrete with CONTEGA MULTIBOND. The secondary
air barrier is a SOLITEX membrane outboard of the insulation
or with Gutex MULTITHERM wood fiberboard, is the board
insulation itself. If wood fiberboard continuous insulation with
WRB capabilities is used, like MULTITHERM, then the SOLITEX
membrane is not needed.
Strapping is placed on top of the membrane to provide both
back-vented rainscreen cavities and additional support for the
insulation. Depending on the siding direction, counter battens may
be needed to ensure a robust cavity space. Care should be taken
to avoid puncturing the membrane when installing the siding.
Vapor Control
Vapor control in the wall is provided by the inboard air and vapor
control layer – either DB+ paper-based membrane or INTELLO
membrane. These membranes are smart variable vapor retarders:
They prevent moisture loading in the winter months while allowing
inward drying in the summer months.

25 Metal Frame Smart Enclosure System

Insulation
Typical insulations in the stud cavities include Gutex
THERMOFLEX, fiberglass or mineral wool batts, or dense-pack
Gutex THERMOFIBER, cellulose, or fiberglass. For the continuous
outboard insulation, Gutex wood fiberboard should be used.
MULITHERM acts as insulation, wind-tight layer and a WRB -
removing an installation and saving labor.

8.3 PENETRATIONS
Every penetration adds a risk of failure to the airtight enclosure
and therefore should be made as rare as possible. If penetrations
are unavoidable, they must be fully integrated into the airtight
system. Typical construction, where electrical and plumbing
services are run through the metal framing, results in a multitude
of such compromising penetrations. To avoid this and minimize
penetrations, a service cavity inboard of the air control layer
should be installed. A service cavity is typically formed by running
metal hat-channel furring horizontally with the interior finish
applied to the strapping. All wiring, electric boxes and plumbing
can then be run in the service cavity, allowing penetrations to the
control layers to be limited to services and windows and doors.

Window & Door Penetrations

Windows and doors comprise the biggest and most obvious
penetrations. The window and door units themselves should
be completely airtight and very well thermally broken so that
integration becomes a matter of carefully connecting the interior
(inboard) and exterior (outboard) window and door components
to the surrounding control layers. At the primary (inboard) airtight
layer, the best connection to the window frames is TESCON
PROFIL split-back tape – optimal for precise inside corners, when
face taping, or CONTEGA SOLIDO SL-D when taping for tight finish
requirements. Outboard, CONTEGA SOLIDO EXO-D or TESCON
PROFIL is ideal at window jambs, head and sills. To form a window
sill pan, EXTOSEAL ENCORS is an extremely flexible, durable and
self-sealing watertight tape for optimal protection. If plywood
boxes are used to transition from wall to window, leaky edges of
builder-grade plywood should be taped with TESCON VANA.

Joist Penetrations
Where joist penetrations are necessary, at rigid surfaces, brush or
spray-on VISCONN liquid membrane is preferred. At membranes,
the use of TESCON PROFIL tape for inside corners completely
surrounding the joist is a typical approach.

Duct, Pipe & Wire Penetrations

Exterior duct, pipe and wire penetrations should be kept to an
absolute minimum – if possible limited to core services such as
ventilation ducts, water service, etc. Full airtight integration can be
assured with flexible ROFLEX and ROFLEX SOLIDO EPDM gaskets
or permanent taped connections with TESCON VANA. Foam is the
least reliable air seal and is not recommended.

8.4 ROOFS
The roof assembly of a metal framed building can be almost
of any high-performance type. In this section, we offer several
roof types featuring vapor open construction with robust interior
airtightness and smart vapor control.

Airtightness and Vapor Control

As with walls, the primary air and vapor control is inboard of the
insulation layer and consists of INTELLO X or INTELLO PLUS
airtight and smart vapor retarding membrane being applied to
the underside of the roof structure. A service cavity is provided
inboard of the INTELLO, both to protect the airtight membrane
and to help resist the weight of insulation above it. Outboard, we
typically recommend back-vented rain screens for pitched roofs –
similar to the 2x walls. At flat roofs, an unvented assembly is more
predictable and robust.

Insulation
At roof structure cavities typical approaches can be dense-
pack cellulose or Gutex THERMOFIBER or loose-fill HAVELOCK
WOOL insulation, held with INTELLO PLUS membrane and wood
strapping.
Gutex ULTRATHERM wood fiberboard insulation is also a WRB at
pitched roofs. MUTLITHERM or THERMOSAFE WD boards may be
used with a SOLITEX WRB covering.

Continuity
Continuity of air and water control layers is extremely important at
intersections – such as roof peaks and valleys, as well as edges
where the roof connects with wall assemblies. We, therefore,
consider a number of different roof conditions to ensure continuity
