Reflection

Arnis also is known as Kali or Eskrima, is the national martial art of the Philippines. It is a martial
art characterized by the use of “swinging and twirling movements, accompanied by striking,
thrusting and parrying techniques for defense and offense.” These fighting techniques can be
traced back to native fighting techniques during conflicts among the various Prehispanic Filipino
tribes, but the current form has Spanish influence from the old fencing in Spain. We should give
importance to this original martial art of us so it will remain alive even with the next
generations. People of other countries even go to the Philippines just to learn this sport, so it is
something that we can be proud of.

This video shows what the sport of arnis looks like. And it also shows how the sticks used in
arnis are made. GM Rodel Dagooc, an arnis cane maker and also one of the most influential
arnis athlete explains why arnis is well known around the world. He said that a lot of people are
interested in this sport because it is more efficient and easy to learn than other martial arts.
Arnis also shows almost all of the movements involved in other martial arts, so it is like an all-
around form of martial art.

Master Dagooc was introduced into arnis at a young age of 14, and since then he always uses
most of his time to learn arnis. And as time passes, GM Dagooc achieved a lot because of his
time and dedication to the sport. It just shows that you can go far if you are dedicated to
something.

This video also taught me how rich Filipino culture and tradition is, and we could make it well
known around the world just like arnis if we continue to preserve and nourish this culture of us.
