Ottokie and his father were in the control tower above the airport terminal building. The young boy was happy. Ever since his 10" birthday the week before, he had been allowed to go and see his dad at his workplace. * a First Nations people who live in the Arctic in North America and Greenland.Ottokie’s father Amittuq worked in the airport’s control tower. He gave pilots information about weather conditions. He also made sure that the runway was always clear. Amittuq said, “There’s a snow storm coming. Elza flew to Ivujivik this afternoon to fetch someone who needs to go to hospital. But I have not heard from her. Maybe she saw the bad weather coming and decided to stay the night there. We can close up here now.”Ottokie was disappointed. He would have loved to see Elza’s plane landing. “What about the patient?” asked the boy. “Pilots do everything they can,” said Amittuq. “But maybe there was a delay and Elza could not take off. She will be here tomorrow.”Ottokie looked at the sky one last time. He thought about the person who needed to go to hospital. Would they get worse if Elza could not bring them back fast enough? Puvirnituq hospital was the only one in the whole area. Ottokie said, “Shall I switch off the radio, Dad?” “Yes, thank you, my boy.”As they left the terminal, Amittuq held out the keys of the quad bike to his son. “Can you drive us home?” Ottokie was thrilled. He loved driving the quad bike, especially when his father sat behind him! In spite of the cold, they both had a smile on their face as they rode over the thin layer of snow that was beginning to cover the tundra*. \ woN 4: ~ ~ < 7 4 * a flat plain covered in moss and small bushes that can survive in the cold.That evening there was a party in town. Everyone was getting together to celebrate the opening of the new skating rink. Ottokie and his friend Sarah could not decide whether to go or not. In the end, they decided not to. They had to finish their sculptures for a school project. Sarah’s father dropped his daughter at Ottokie’s house and offered Amittuq a lift to the party. As he left, Amittuq said to the children, “The phone at the skating rink is not working yet. So you will not be able to "7 call us. Be good until we get back:Sarah and Ottokie were best friends so they were happy to see each other again even though they had spent all day together at school.When their dads left, they picked up their art project where they had left off the evening before. Ottokie was carving a hunter in a kayak and Sarah was making a narwhal*. They chiselled away happily at their pieces of stone. Half an hour later, the purring of an engine distracted them from their work. The two friends looked up at the same moment in surprise. * sea mammal. Males have a 3m long tusk.Sarah and Ottokie are finishing their sculptures for a school project ( h i when they hear the sound of an engine. a er Elza’s plane Ottokie and Sarah put down their tools. “That sounds like a plane!” said Sarah. “Can't be!” said Ottokie. “My father said that planes would be staying on the ground tonight because there’s a storm coming.” The two friends went outside. 13Ottokie tried to identify the plane from a distance but it was not easy. It was 6 o'clock and already dark. Then he saw a polar bear on the plane’s tail. That meant it was Elza’s plane. The plane was flying in circles right above their heads. “Tt looks like Elza is trying to get our attention!” said Ottokie. “Why is she flying over your house rather than going to land at the airport?” asked Sarah.Ottokie suddenly understood why. “Elza’s asking for help!” he yelled. “There must be a problem at the airport!” There was no mobile phone network so far north and Sarah remembered Ottokie’s dad saying there was no telephone line at the skating rink yet. She said, “Shall we go and get your dad?” Ottokie thought about how much time it would take to reach the skating rink and then find his father in the crowd.“No! It will take too long!” he said. “Let's go to the airport! I know how to use the radio. Elza will tell us what’s going on.” The two friends quickly pulled on their anoraks. Ottokie put the keys of the terminal in his pocket. Then he grabbed the quad bike keys. He said, “It’s okay. I know how to drive!” Ottokie often drove to the airport with his dad. But that evening, it was Sarah sitting behind him on the quad bike.When they arrived, Elza was flying in huge circles in the sky. It had started to snow. Sometimes the plane disappeared in the clouds. Ottokie unlocked the door of the terminal building as fast as he could. He and Sarah raced up the stairs to the control tower.Ottokie walked straight over to the radio. He switched it on and picked up the microphone. “Elza, it’s me, Ottokie!” “Ottokie? Where's your father?” “He’s at the skating rink. Do you want me to go and fetch him?” “There’s no time!” said Elza. “You did the right thing coming straight to the airport.”The pilot went on, “T had to take a detour because of the storm. I don’t have much fuel left so I can’t turn back... and I have a passenger who is about to have a baby. She needs to get to hospital right away.” Sarah and Ottokie looked at each other. The situation was a lot more serious than they had thought. “T can’t switch on the runway lights. Can you have a look and see why not?” asked Elza. “Sure!”Ottokie knew that when pilots were approaching the airport they could turn on the runway lights by clicking five times on their microphone switch. He said to himself, “Maybe Dad forgot to turn the system on before he left.” Ottokie went to the other end of the room where the airport lighting panel was. He looked at all the switches... But the runway ( h i lights will not switch on. a ei Runway lights Ottokie looked at the switches. His father probably knew them off by heart because none of them had a label to show what they were for. He was out of luck! Sarah suggested helpfully, “Why don’t you try them one by one?” Ottokie flicked a switch. “That's the waiting room!” said Sarah. 21The boy quickly flicked a second switch. Floodlights in front of the hangar came on. “It’s not that one,” said Sarah. Then they heard five clicks over the radio. It was Elza trying to activate the lights again. The pilot reported, “Still not working...” Ottokie’s hand shook a little. The third switch turned on a set of bright lights in front of the air terminal building. Sarah said to Ottokie, “Are you sure these are the right switches?”Ng cea a op Sete ~~ “Er... I’m almost sure. Can you see any others?” Sarah looked around the room but all she could see was a megaphone behind the desk. Ottokie flicked two other switches. The fuel station and the windsock lit up. aa ae = 23There was only one switch left. “Tt must be that one!” thought Ottokie, pressing the button. At that moment, they heard five clicks over the radio. It was Elza checking the system again. Ottokie held his breath. One second, two seconds... Then white lights came on along each side of the runway! They heard Elza’s voice. “Well done Ottokie!” Then she joked, “With all the lights on, I feel as if I’m flying over a city!” Ottokie and Sarah felt happy and relieved.They went outside to watch the landing. Large snowflakes were falling now. Elza’s plane approached the runway through flurries of snow. “Do you think the mum will have her baby in the plane?” said Sarah anxiously. Ottokie said, “I hope not. In any case, she will be on the ground soon. We don’t need to worry anymore...” But just as the wheels were about to touch down on the runway, Elza nosed the plane back up into the sky.The runway lights are on and Elza is about to land, But, at the last moment, the plane ( h t climbs back up into the sky. a er Caribous Ottokie ran up the stairs to the tower and grabbed the microphone to speak to Elza. “What's the matter?” The pilot explained, “I was about to land when two caribous came onto the runway. Can you chase them off? I can’t land while they are there... and I only have enough fuel to fly for fifteen more minutes!” 26Ottokie’s heart beat fast. He told Elza, “We will do it right now!” “Hurry, please!” said Elza. “Also, when we land we need someone there to take my passenger to the hospital as quickly as possible.” Ottokie went outside where Sarah was waiting. As he jumped on the quad bike, he said, “T have to go and chase some caribous off the runway. You call the hospital. We need an ambulance for the mum!”While Sarah tried to phone the hospital, Ottokie drove towards the runway that was beginning to be covered in snow. He immediately spotted the huge animals. There were at least six of them. But they didn’t take much notice of the quad bike. They were too busy enjoying licking the salt that had been spread on the runway to stop it freezing.Ottokie drove towards one caribou and the animal moved off the runway. The boy charged at the caribous one after the other. When he reached the end of the runway, he was sure he had chased them all off. But when he turned round to go back he saw that the stubborn creatures were already on the runway again!Ottokie was stubborn too so he charged them again. But as soon as the quad bike moved away, the caribous immediately went back to the runway. Ottokie was furious. “Argh! It’s no good!” Just then, Elza flew over the runway. She still could not land. Ottokie was worried. “I hope everything is okay in the plane,” he thought.The caribous will not move off the runway. Elza cant land. Ottokie hopes everything is ( h t all right in the plane. a er Time ticks on... Ottokie joined Sarah in the control tower. “T can’t chase the caribous away,” he explained, trying to catch his breath. His friend thought for a moment. Then she remembered the megaphone. “What if we try with the megaphone? I could stand behind you on the quad bike and shout to scare away the caribous.” 31Ottokie didn’t know what to do. He shrugged his shoulders. “Even the sound of the plane’s engines does not make them run away...” Sarah said, “Maybe Elza didn’t come down low enough...” Just then the radio crackled. “Ottokie? Are you there?” asked the pilot. The boy answered immediately. 32Elza said, “I can’t work out my altitud anymore because of this snowstorm. When I come down low, everything just looks white. I need you to give me the numbers on the altimeter so I can calculate my position. Can you see it? It should be labelled on the control panels?” Ottokie remembered that his father had told him that pilots need to adjust their altitude indicator just before they land. 33,— The boy looked carefully at all the control screens and panels. There were so many numbers... Then he switched on the microphone. “Elza, I think I found the altimeter!” “Great! Read me the numbers you see.” “2-9-2-5,” said the boy clearly. “Perfect!” replied the pilot. “We are all set now... except that I’m really low on fuel. If I have to fly over the runway again to chase off the caribous, I will not have enough fuel left to land...”“We will sort them out, Elza. Just give us three more minutes.” “Please hurry! My passenger is about to give birth on the plane!” There was not a second to lose. Sarah jumped on the quad bike behind Ottokie with the megaphone in her hand.Ottokie tells Elza the altimeter measurement. At last she will be able to land. But first, ( h i the caribous must get off the runway! a ei On the runway This time the caribous looked up when Ottokie drove towards them... probably because Sarah was shouting and yelling at them through the megaphone! She stood on the back of the bike and shrieked, “Get out of the way, tuktus*!” Her voice echoed through the cold air. “Move, you four-legged lazybones! Get away from the de-icing salt!” Ottokie could not help smiling. * means ‘caribou’ in the Inuit language. 3738 The caribous didn’t like all the noise. Several of them ran off even before the quad bike charged them. Sarah carried on shouting through the megaphone. “Clear off! Go back to Father Christmas!” Soon all the caribous had wandered off into the tundra. “Elza is trying to land again!” said Sarah.Ottokie stopped some distance away from the runway. The two friends watched through thick snow as the plane was buffeted by strong winds. “This time, they will make it,” said Ottokie, trying to sound confident. The ambulance arrived behind them. A doctor and nurse got out quickly. Ottokie explained, “Elza told us that her passenger is about to have a baby.” “We will take good care of her,” said the doctor calmly. 39Moments later, several snow bikes parked next to the ambulance. The news had reached the skating rink. Ottokie’s father ran over to his son. He patted him on the head. “T see you found the lights...” was all he said. But Ottokie could tell his father was proud of him. He smiled.At last, the wheels of the plane touched down on the runway. The snow swirled all around as it slowed down and came to a stop. Elsa immediately opened the door and everyone hurried over to the plane. The doctor and the nurse went inside and the door closed behind them. 4142 The minutes ticked by very slowly. Ottokie felt nervous. He took hold of Sarah’s hand and squeezed it tightly. He whispered, “I hope...” Then suddenly, the handle on the door of the plane moved. Elza reappeared in her flying suit. She looked exhausted but she had a big smile on her face.“T am happy to announce the birth of twins — a boy and a girl - here on the tarmac at Puvirnitug airport. Mother and babies are doing well.” Everyone cheered and clapped. The new family was taken straight to hospital. 43Ottokie and Sarah were very happy. Elza came over to talk to them. “Thanks to you, I was able to land in time. I owe you one...” Ottokie said with a smile, “One what? I would like a chocolate cake, please!” The pilot said, “Then I owe you one huge, chocolate cake!” She gave the two children a hug.Sarah asked, “I wonder what the mum will call her babies?” Elza said, “I don’t know. But just after the twins were born, she asked me what your first names were.” The two friends looked at each other and smiled. It would be so cool if the twins were called Ottokie and Sarah!
