History of Physical Education Part 1
The Primitive Society
Physical education dates back to the primitive times. Primitive man moved in
order to satisfy a felt need or necessity. The physical activities of the primitive man were
not organized. His motives for physical activities were mainly to search for food and
protect himself.
For the primitive man whose language was less adequate, dance was a mean
of expressions. Dance was the oldest and liveliest of arts, which enables the primitive man
to communicate joy or grief by using the most immediate instrument of his disposal – his
body. For the primitive man, dance is a way of thinking and living. The primitive man
danced when his child is born, when he is old enough to be accepted as an adult member
of the tribe, when he marries, when someone dies, when he gains courage for battle,
when he beats his enemy, and when he prays to his God to drive away evil spirits.
Play and games were also important part of living for the primitive man. It was
a recognized way to improve strength, speed, and skills which were necessary
qualities for survival.

In the city-state of Sparta in Ancient Greece, physical education was practiced
to develop a strong and powerful army. The Spartans were subservient to the state and
required to help it against enemies. Women were also required to be in good physical
condition. Their major training consisted of physical activities such as wrestling, jumping,
running, throwing the javelin and discus, horseback riding, and hunting. Only the strong
and vigorous babies were allowed to live in this military state.
In another city-state, Athens, the Athenians believed in the development of the
total individual in all life’s aspect. Their objective for physical education was for physical
perfection with emphasis on beauty of physiques. Gymnastics was believed to contribute
to physical development and music was also considered important for the intellect.
Gymnastics for the youth was practiced in Palaestra, a building which provided rooms for
various physical activities. The Paidotribe, the proprietor of the Palaestra, was responsible
for directing the exercise for the youth. On the other hand, the Gymnasium, the social,
intellectual, and physical center of Greece, was led by the over-all in charge called the
Gymnasiarch.
In keeping with the close association between physical education and religion,
each gymnasium recognized a particular deity, such as the Academy for Athena,
Lyceum for Apollo, and Kynosarges for Hercules.
Greece had national festival events which were most important in the lives of
the citizens. Four of them are of special importance and attracted national attention:
1. Olympia Festival. This is the most famost of the four. In honor of Zeus, the
supreme god, this festival was held in Western Peloponneses District.
2. Pythia Festival. In honor of Apollo, god of light and truth, this festival was held
at Delphi.
3. Nemea Festival. This festival was in honor of Zeus at Argolis and was held
near Cleonae.
4. Isthmia Festival. This festival was in honor of Poseidon, the God of the seas,
and was held at the Isthmus of Corinth.
The first Olympics was held in 776 BC and continued every four years thereafter.
The contestants had to undergo ten months training and rigid screening. He had to be a
