Topic: Over the Sea


Book: “Lost and Found”

formed sentences.

LO: Use some of their print and letter knowledge in their early writing. Spell words by
identifying the sounds and then writing the sound with letters.

Intro: travelling over the sea.


Show the globe. The world is made of land and water. Land is hard like the ground
underneath us. Are we on the sea or on land now?
On the globe or on a map, the sea is blue and land is green. Show Power Point. “Finding
the sea on a map” Now show the globe again-point to places and ask the children if it is
sea or land? What animal we would find there?
Now we know that the world is made of land and water. We can travel over the land or
how else can we travel? – by car, train, or bus.
How do you think we can get from here to here? (Show on globe). Yes, we can fly on an
aeroplane. How else can we cross the sea? Yes, we can cross the sea in boats.

Intro: What form of transport are we learning about today? Yes, we are learning about
ships and boats.

Main:
Read the story “Lost and Found”. Stop at each page- talk about the illustrations.
Focus on the feelings of the characters. How does the penguin feel at the beginning and
end? How does the Boy feel at the beginning and end?
Explain key vocabulary: Lonely, sad, far travel, South Pole, snow, ice umbrella.
What does the penguin use as a boat?
Classroom Activities and Focus
1.Explain that on the writing table you can write:
- HL: what would you say to make the penguin feel happy? Writing – penguin
writing paper.
- ML: to continue the starter “I liked it when…” Example: I liked it when the boy
hugged the penguin.
- LL: to tell an adult their favourite part of the story and to write word from the
story with support. Example: Boy, penguin, hug.
2.Trace the words. (Twinkl sheet)
3.Creative - 3D penguins.

Why did the boy want to help the penguin find his way home?
What made the boy realize the penguin was lonely? How would you describe the boy?
Why did the boy return to the South Pole to get the penguin?
