MOVEMENT CONCEPT

 is the

boundless three-dimensional extent in which

objects and events have relative position and
direction.
 Space awareness is being aware of how much your body occupies
and where your body is in space in relation to surrounding objects
or people. It also means being able to respond when the positions
of these people or objects change.
 For instance, when they are able to crawl, kids will start to walk to
different objects and understand how many steps it takes to reach
them. They will eventually be able to understand how their
location to the objects changes as they move, and this is how they
become aware of the space around them and the relationship
between their body and it.

 Space awareness is a skill that children start and need to develop

from an early age in order to be able to interact with the
environment around them. This skill can be learned by combining
different motor skills with visual, auditory and tactile abilities
 - Five aspects

 Location
 Refers to where the body moves
 Direction
 Levels
 Pathways
 Extension
LOCATION LEVELS
 Self-space-Low
 General space -Medium
-High

DIRECTION PATHWAY
SPACE AWARENESS( where the body moves)
Ø Up/Down -Straight
Ø Right/Left -Curved
Ø Clockwise/Counterclockwise -Zigzag

EXTENSION
Ø Large/Small
 Location
 Level
 Pathway
 Extension
EFFORT( how the body moves)
Ø Time
Ø Force
Ø Flow
RELATIONSHIPS(with whom, or what the body moves
Ø Of body parts
Ø With objects and/or people
Ø With people

movement concepts and skill
themes and their components

- Outer ring describes idea

- Middle ring gives categories within the idea
- Inner ring defines the category components
v Should be the focus at the beginning of your
program to introduce children to moves safety
within the environment
v Location concept are foundation concept crucial to
all future learning
v Direction, level, pathway and extension concept
are taught to children with a focus an:
1. Understanding terminology and demonstrating
the basic concept
2. Combining space awareness concept and/or
components within a concept or how concept
relates to objects and people
SELF-SPACE
The space the body can move from a given
location without traveling
§ Increase students awareness of movement
possibilities
§ Children also build foundation of
nonlocomotor skills (twisting, turning,
bending) that can be used to developed other
concepts and skills.
The space within a room or boundary in which
the students can move by traveling safety
Ø Taught after self-space understood

Ø Teaches children to move safely in a various

ways and increase complexity
Ø Refer to dimensional possibility in which the
body or body parts aim to moves (up/down,
right/left, forward/backward,
counterclockwise/clockwise)

Levels concepts
Ø Refers to horizontal levels in space where the
body or its parts can move (high, middle, low)
v Refers to imaginary design body makes or that
object makes, on the floor, in the air when
moving
v When children master this concepts and gain
better control of their travel, they can use
curved pathways to avoid collision when
travelling through general space.
§ Refers to both spatial relationship of body
parts to entire body and to size of movements
in space

§ Small movements: body movements done close

to body

§ Large movements: body movements with
extremities extended
Ø Children find it difficult to learn left/right
(direction) pathway and extension

Ø Wait for children to develop skills related to

these concepts before emphasizing them.

 Therefore, space awareness in movement education refers to the
ability to be aware of where your body is during physical
activities and where and when to move it. This ability is really
important in any aspect of life, but it’s crucial in PE. Children
should be able to understand how to move their bodies in order
to be able to take part in different sports, since all of them
include movement. Moreover is also important in games that
include other elements, such as a ball. Even for a simple
throwing and catching game, children should be able to quickly
determine how the distance of a ball from them, how fast is the
ball moving and when will it reach them.
