The stroke order of every Kanji character is also explained to enable proper writing habits. The characters and their readings in this textbook are selected based on Japanese Language Proficiency Test: Test Content Specifications (revised ed.) created and edited by the Japan Foundation and Association of International Education, published by Bonjinsha, 2006. > Structure This textbook comprises 15 lessons and three comprehensive tests. Each lesson is divided in four parts and introduces 20 new kanji characters. >kLessons Each lesson contains the introduction, the presentation of characters, the reading part, the writing part and exercises. The on readings of the newly introduced characters are given in katakana and their kun readings are given in hiragana. The readings are arranged in the following order: nouns, i adjectives, na adjectives, verbs (intransitive, transitive), adverbs, iegular readings. The kanji and vocabulary which are presented in the introduction do not include all characters which are given in the presentation. >Explanatory notes 28 Al a7 A 3 G human being A. se orng HAN, nai @) DIY — [BARK asnoumte #4 20 sess npsni JPL 1) Hy A Sedans REN 1 HY | WK coumertrnennie ~~~ cag ~ AGS aan) A 14 tor pe ve 4 A tna, tuman being | A. 4} $F ag wast | ng KA vole AMD | ASE | oang-oang | ingot tits aa FEA ts) 4018 | doe | aan LEER ope. 89 | yet EER swore 64 | ps D Kanji number @ Character @Number of stroke @ Radical Stroke order © On readings © Kun readings @imegular readings 5) Meaning (English, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese) © Vocabulary and its transiation >kSelection of kanji, readings, vocabulary and radicals Kanji 279 former Level 3 kanji and former Level 4 kanji, and 21 former Level 2 kanji were selected from Test Content Specifications. The twenty-one former Level 2 kanji were chosen because they appear in basic vocabulary. On the other hand, five former Level 3 and former Level 4 kanji were omitted from this textbook since they are introduced in Kanji for International Students—Intermediate 700. The omitted land the added kanji are contained in separate tables in this textbook. The five Level 3 kanjitaught at the intermediate level in Kanji for International Students—Intermediate 700 can be found in Table 1 (p.15), and the twenty-one former Level 2-kanj/introduced in this textbook can be found in Table 2 (p.15) Readings Kanji readings given in this textbook are limited to those used in former Level 3 and Level 4 vocabu- lay, For example, the readings ja and watash/ in case of the ‘Hand #h, are adopted after educational consideration and the reading aru in case of the character # is omitted, because of occurance with this reading is very low. Several basic level Kanji readings are not introduced in this textbook, but are intro- duced in Intermediate 700 instead. Those readings are listed in Table 3 (p.15). Vocabulary ‘The selection of the vocabulary were made based on Test Content Specifications for former Level 3 and Level 4, even though the kanji alone were either in former Level 1 and Level 2 or were not included in the List of Joyo Kanji announced by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology (Table 5, p.16). In that case the reading of the relevant kanjiis indicated by small kana letters above it. Vocabu- lary beyond former Level 3 and Level 4 was employed when it was necessary for the relevant topic. It ‘can be divided into two groups: (1) vocabulary from former Level 1 and Level 2 (Table 6, p.16) and (2) vocabulary not contained in the vocabulary list (Table 7, p.16). Loan (or katakana) words which are not included in former Level 1 and Level 2 vocabulary list, but were considered important in everyday life also appear in examples or exercises. Radicals Kanji radicals introduced in this textbook conform to Koki ten (DVD-ROM version, Kinokuniya, 2007), however, those Kanji whose current radical is different from its old version are according to Kadokawa daijigen (Kadokawa, 1992). The readings of the radicals are explained after Daikangorin (Taishakan, 1992). They are: hiragana, katakana, kanji and Roman letters, to, A-S—E DVDY HY J—bh*e ROELK, Kani katakana Romanletter kanji “katakana Kanji & hiragana Hiragana, katakana, kanji and Roman letters are used depending on the type of word. Words of the Japanese origin (wago) are written with kanji(in their Japanese reading or kun yomi) andlor hiragana. Words of the Chinese origin (kango), which constitute the majority of the Japanese lexicon are written with kanj (in their Sino-Japanese reading or on'yomi). Loan words from other languages such as English, German, French, etc., known as gairaigo, are normally written with katakana and sometimes in their original orthography using Roman letters. [ words ofthe Japanese origin] words of the Chinese gin | Loan words (wage) (argo) __(gatraigo)_ a boy 3 aie iI pau ea eth Wago, kango and gairaigo may have different distribution depending on the topic or style. In everyday conversation wago and gairaigo have a larger share, whereas in formal speech or scholarly writing kango are prevalent. The simplicity of the Japanese phonological system rocults in a large number of homophones, which are distinguished in writing by using different kanji characters. It is estimated that in order to freely communicate in written Japanese one should know at least 2,500 kanji characters. Japanese Language Proficiency Test for international students include approximately 300, 1,000 and 2,000 at basic, intermediate and advanced levels respectively. Studying Kanji also greately helps remembering Japanese vocabulary in the process of learning, and vice versa. ©@® On'yomi and kun'yomi {As already mentioned above kanji characters can be used in their Sino-Japanese (on yom) or Japanese (Kun'yomi) readings. It results from the fact that when kanji were introduced to ‘Japan about 1,700 years ago, the Japanese did not have their own script. Needless to say, they had their own language. Kanji were imported with their original meaning and pronounciation, Which lead to their Sino-Japanese reading, but were also given Japanese reading according to the already existing Japanese vocabulary, whose meaning was similar. For example to denote a wheel the Japanese word kuruma was used, but the 75 impoterd kanji if also had a Sino-Japanese reading she. This |__| Onvom/| Kunyom! resulted in #8 having the kun’yomi reading kuruma as a stand-alone | yin, nin | hito word, and the onyomi reading sha in Sino-Japanese compounds. | 3%| dan | otoko There are a few examples of on’yomi and kun'yomi readings of |ie| jo | onna | kan. $$$ Bs PAL On'yomi readings are usually writen with katakana and kun'yomi | ~ | readings are usually written in hiragana in kanj dictionaries, M| sha na 1 (BPOR) © The origin of kanji Four types of kanji can be distinguished depending on their origin and structure. They are (1) pictographs, which depict their designates in the most direct way (LL, JI, FA, 2, 55), (2) non pictorial graphs, which mainly refer to spatial relations and employ lines and dots combined in an abstract way (, *, "F, 22, #4), (8) ideographs, which combine two or more characters or character parts in order to express an abstract meaning (B+=88, A+2K=¢h, A+7K= 4, 2R+2K+2=% , and (4) ideophonographs, in which one element indicates the approximate meaning and the other indicates the on'yomi. ( PF . (F . F ) @ The stroke order Every kanji should be written according to its established stroke order. The general rule is that top strokes should be written before bottom strokes and left strokes should be written before right strokes. Accordingly, the top part of a character should be written before its bottom part and the left part should be written before its right part. — —_— Although to a non-kanji background student it may at first appear rather unfamiliar, the established stroke order is the most natural and efficient way to write kanji characters. Writing kanji using a different stroke order will almost certainly result in wrongly written or illegible characters. It should be noted that Chinese characters used in China or Korea may either vary from Japanese kanji and their stroke order may also be different. © The number of strokes Kanji are written with one or more strokes. A stroke (kaku) is any line or part of a character which is written without detaching the writing tool (pen, ete.) from the paper. The number of strokes is referred to as kakusd. Knowing or being able to determine the number of strokes ina character is important when using character dictionaries because characters or radicals (see Lesson 10) are classified according to the number of strokes. For example, both = and | consist of three lines and are writen with three. [pg strokes: they are three-stroke characters.
