Test on sample mean (monolateral test)

Let's go to the previous exercise

In production of a specific item the average length of the hollow
after the piercer is m .
Due to a plug change and a new set up we take a sample of
length measurements, to check if there has been some change
measurements are reported in data1

Question:
1 define the testing hypothesis, assuming that sample mean is not greater than that of population
2 set the confidence level of the test at 0,95
3 calculate the statistic of the test and compare it with the
statistic score
4 decide if we can accept or not the testing hypothesis

Solution
1 the null hypothesis is that sample is a random extraction from a population
having the defined mean not greater than m
or the sample has statistically the same mean or smaller than population
2 confidence level 0,90
3 the statistic test t requires
- mean of the sample
- std. dev of the sample
- sample size and d.o.f.
4 the statistic score requires
- probability or significance level
-d.o.f.
in this case statistic and score must be calculated taking in account that
the required probability stays in one side of the interval
5 in this case statistic is greater than score
we cannot accept the null hypothesis
something is changed in production
Data of statistic and score are so close that more measurements are suggested
To evaluate the closeness of the score and statistics generally it is enough
increase the confidence level of a step
If with increased confidence level the result of test changes we remain in doubt
(see figures in blue)
6 we can calculate the confidence interval of the sample mean
and we will see that the population mean is outside of the confidence interval

We learned to
- calculate the statistic t
- calculate the score t using the Excel function TINV(…)
-compare statistic and score
-verify the same hypothesis using the confidence interval
eater than that of population
