I think I know who you want to see in the village of F to find out about your soldier, the former minister
told me. It is not the teacher or his brother. They do not know anything about the 14 th Regiment. It is the
postman. Others have been here before looking for him. I do not know how the story got around that the
postman might know something about the men from the 14th Regiment. It does not make sense, since the
postman has not returned from the front either. He too was a soldier in the 14th Regiment. And nobody
knows exactly what happened to the Regiment there, on the riverbank. I am from the village F myself.
And the postman’s house is next to mine. His wife married the teacher’s brother a year ago. Maybe that’s
where the confusion comes from.
