sentences.

They tried climbing up the mountain but they got tired halfway. (Direct object of a verb)

● Some verbs can be followed directly by an infinitive. They can be used with or without
a noun/pronoun object before the infinitive, depending on the meaning. Some of

2. TIPS FOR GRAMMAR IN USE

2.1 The present perfect continuous is used to express a continuing action that began
in the past and continues in the present. When making sentences in the present
perfect continuous use the HAVE / HAS + BEEN + PAST PARTICIPLE formula.
Ex.
They have been playing videogames all day.
How long has he been fixing the car for?

2.1.1 When employing the present perfect continuous you may have to use the
following prepositions and expressions:
Ex.
- For (20 minutes / 3 hours / 5 days / 10 months…)
- Since (Last Tuesday / December 10th / 1998 / July 2nd / they had an accident.
- Lately, recently , these days.

2.1.2 NEVER use the present perfect continuous in sentences with ALREADY, YET,
BEFORE and EVER because they describe finished actions. Use the present perfect
instead.
Ex.
They’ve already called the boss NOT They have already been calling the boss.
2.2 We use cleft sentences, especially in speaking, to connect what is already
understood to what is new to the listener. In a cleft sentence, a single message is
divided (cleft) into two clauses. This allows us to focus on the new information. Use
WHAT as the subject of the sentence + the verb be to make the emphasis.
Ex.

She doesn’t like mushrooms -------------- What she doesn’t like is mushrooms.
She didn’t understand the lesson ------- What she didn’t understand was the lesson.

2.2.1 Always keep in mind that the form of the verb BE has to agree with its
complement
Ex.

The terrible service made everyone angry -------- What made everyone angry was the
terrible service.
