Description

Map: spread of neoorthodox Sufism into North Africa. Asian-African movements responding to
European expansion before the imposition of direct European control can be divided into
'popular responses' (neoorthodoxy, native pressure) & 'official responses.' In the Islamic world,
neoorthodoxy took the form of 'neoorthodox Sufism'; beginning with the Naqshbandiya Sufi
order in India, Sufi leaders embraced 'historical judgment' (European expansion represents
God's punishing Muslims for their religious laxity) then preached repentance or a renewed
emphasis on orthodoxy. These ideas & movements spread from India to Arabia to the Fertile
Crescent & Egypt then to North Africa.
