PART I : SAMPLE
SAMPLE
A survey questionnaire was used to analyse and distribute online via email.
The data were collected from a sample of students at Western Sydney
University and other acquaintances.

The total sample size was 116, and English was the primary language. Overall,
the age of the participants ranged from 13 to 26, with 47.41% from 18-20, and
a noticeably most significant number of respondents aged 19, with 25 people.
Notably, approximately 60% of the respondents were female.

Questionnaires
USAGE RATE OF SOCIAL MEDIA SITES

Respondents were asked about the frequency rate on using social media
sites. The social media sites include Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, and
Tiktok. The respondents have 5 options to choose:

AVERAGE GENERAL USAGE RATE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Participants were asked about how much time was spent on social media
daily. As the data were nominal, these data were converted into ratio data by
calculating the average of each answer. For instance, with the result "1-3
hours" will be converted into the average from 1 to 3, it is 2.

5
FREQUENCY OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE

This survey asked users of each platform how often they engage with the
site, whether rarely, sometimes, often or always . This question was
designed as a Likert scale question that respondents have to rate their
frequency of social media use.

FAVORITE SOCIAL MEDIA SITES

There are four options for respondents to choose from based on their
preferences about favourite social media site (Facebook, Youtube, Instagram
and Tiktok).

PART II: ANALYSE
CONTINGENCY TABLES - APPLYING PROBABILITY

-Let's look at some actual data collected by a group of students at WesternSydney

University Vietnam. This table is a cross-tabulation of frequencies into rows and
columns. It shows a cross-tabulation of the frequencies of using versus different social
media sites. By applying the concepts of probability, these data can be interpreted
more precise.

-Using marginal probability, for example, in terms of column totals, 116 out of 464 so
the marginal probability of Instagram usage rate as a social media platform is P(R2) =
116/464= 0.25
The proportion of students who use social media site like Instagram regarding to
any frequency is about 25%.
Besides, using row totals, the marginal probability of Often is P(F2)= 177/464= 0.38
There is a 38% of people using social media (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube,
Tiktok) often.

-For Joint probability, the upper right-hand cell is the joint event that people rarely use
TikTok as a social media site. So it can be written P(F1 and R4). The joint probability is
P(F1 and R4) = 21/464= 0.05. This means that there is about 4.5% of respondents who
rarely use Tiktok.

-Conditional probability: P(R1|F4)= 51/464= 0.102. In other words, there is about 11%
of participants who use Facebook, given that the frequency is always.

-Independence probability: The events in this table can be checked whether

independent or not. If (R1) were independent of (F4), then the conditional probability
P(R1|F4) will equal to marginal probability P(R1) but this is not the case, P(R1|F4) is not
equal to P(R1) (0.102 0.25). In addition, P( R1 and F4) P( R1)P(F4) (0.110 0.075).
Therefore, (R1) are not independent of (F4).
7
ONE-WAY ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE (ANOVA)

After analysing the collected data, it is unknown that whether there were
any statistically significant differences between the means of 4
independent groups. Therefore, a technique named One-way ANOVA was
used to determine it.

8
1. F – TEST METHOD [RONALD A. FISHER IN THE 1930S]

To determine whether all the means of 4 groups are equal, the F-test
method was used:

Step 1: State the Hypotheses

H0: 𝜇1 = 𝜇2 = ⋯ = 𝜇4
H1: Not all the means are equal
Step 2 + 3:

Step 4: Because Fcalc > Fcrit, it is concluded that all the means of 4
groups are not equal

9
2. POST HOC TESTS WITH ANOVA

To determine exactly which group means are different, a Tukey post hoc
test was performed:

Step 1: State the Hypotheses

H0: 𝜇j = 𝜇k
H1: 𝜇j ≠ 𝜇k
Step 2 + 3: d.f = n-c = 460; α=.05

Step 4: If tcalc > tcrit for each groups, the hypotheses would be rejected. It
could be concluded that there were 3 groups which have the same means:
Instagram
Youtube
Tiktok

10
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTIC

To empirically identify which social media site is used mostly,

participants were asked about their favourite social media site. As a
result, Facebook is the most social media site used by respondents,
approximately 33.62%. In general, the column chart were skewed right
and not unusual.

11
SIMPLE REGRESSION
After collected and interpreted the data, age and average of using rate
were 2 variables. To particularly identify that if the age and the
average using rate have any relationship. The data will be tested for
significant correlation using Student’s t and test for significant slope.

1. TEST FOR SIGNIFICANT CORRELATION

Hypotheses: Test the hypothesis
𝐻0: 𝜌 = 0
𝐻1: 𝜌 ≠ 0
Applying the formula: (α = 0.05)
r = 0.1589
n = 14
d.f = 12
tcalc = 0.5577
tcrit = 2.1788
Because tcrit > tcalc, the conclusion is fail to reject the hypothesis. Therefore, the
correlation was negligible
Moreover, it is stated that whether the age will influence the average rate of using
social media, so the test for significance in slope was performed.
12
2.TEST FOR SIGNIFICANT SLOPE

With the aim of identifying the linear model: y= 𝜷𝟎 + 𝜷𝟏 × 𝒙 and state that if 𝜷1 is not equal to 0 so that

x (Age) will influence y (Using Rate). (α = 0.05)

Firstly, by applying the formula, the fundamental data were found to primarily identify the

Estimated Slope and Standard Error Of Slope (sb1).

Secondly, with 2 found data, tcalc and tcrit will be calculated. Because the goal is to find if age

will influence using rate, the righ-tailed test need to be performed.

Finally, there is a comparison between tcalc and tcrit, as a final result, tcalc < tcrit (0.55<2.17) so

it is fail to reject the hypothesis. Therefore, age will not influence the using rate.
