CHAPTER 1:

Theoretical Background of The Study

Small and medium-sized enterprises play an essential role in the economic development of a country,
containing little empirical evidence on the process of innovation in services, despite their contribution to a
wide range of jobs and, to the increase of the gross domestic product, mainly of countries characterized as
emerging (Halme, Lindeman, & Linna, 2012; Hall, Matos, Sheehan, & Silvestre, 2012; Halme, Kourula,
Lindeman, Kallio, Lima-Toivanen, & Korsunova, 2016).

Authors such as Mbugua et al. (2013) and Meressa (2020) highlight that the growth of micro and small
companies is directly linked to the sustainable development of underdeveloped economies. As stated by
Meressa (2020), many researches sought to identify the variables that are widely used as determining factors
in the growth process of companies. The results of these surveys show different impacts in relation to the
various growth factors, such as location, motivation, implementation of technologies, among others.

The effect of the size of companies on innovation has established relevance in recent years, and several
studies have sought to examine this relationship, as stated by Prajogo and McDermott (2014). These authors
examined this relationship, taking as an essential measure the question of

whether the determinants of innovation performance are different between SMEs and large companies.
Similarly, the organizational factors and capabilities that have proven to be effective in creating innovation
in large companies are also effective in small and medium-sized companies.

Generally, small businesses are inherently affected not only in terms of acquired resources, capacities or
skills, but also in the ability to generate those resources through learning economies of scale. Moreover,
these resource limitations, in most cases, are associated with trivial management structures, resulting in
inefficiency in recognizing market opportunities, low identification of new technologies, and risk aversion,
negatively impacting innovation (Bianchi et al., 2010).

The use of an informal strategic structure is one of the elements punctuated by Charles, Ojera, and David
(2015) that direct about 75% of small companies around the world collapse operationally in the first 5 years
of presence in the market. In another line of considerations, the authors state that small companies are
fundamental in social issues, whether in the form of job creation or the search for income equality.

CHAPTER 2

Introduction
I have completed my internship in DoubleTree by Hilton. from duration: 17/6/2019 to 13/06/2019,
which is located in Iblur Gate, ORR-Sarjapur Road Jct, Bangalore -560099. India.

The first DoubleTree hotel opened in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1969. It was located on the grounds
of Scottsdale Fashion Square and was built by Sam Ketchell. The Doubletree Corporation merged with
Promus Hotel Corporation in December 1997, bringing together the Doubletree, Red Lion, Hampton Inn,
and Embassy Suites brands. In December 1999, Hilton Hotels Corporation acquired Promus Hotel
Corporation which brought Doubletree Hotels and other Promus hotel brands under the umbrella of the
newly renamed Hilton Worldwide. In early 2011, Hilton Worldwide launched a logo and name rebranding
for the chain, replacing the name "Doubletree" with "DoubleTree by Hilton".

DoubleTree's strategy to grow the brand has been to convince operators of other brands to switch flags. This
is in contrast to brands like Marriott or Sheraton which rely on new construction to grow their footprint.
DoubleTree also provides lower cost options to improve properties, which help operators remain in the
brand system.

The world's largest DoubleTree, a 1,094-room resort, opened in Orlando on International Drive in 2009 after
a renovation that cost $35 million.

Highlights

 Conveniently located in the Commercial Business District of Outer Ring Road-Sarjapur

 Large studios and spacious one, two- and three-bedroom suites
 All rooms have a private balcony, fully equipped kitchen and access to the rooftop pool
 Exotic Pan-Asian dining experience at Asia Alive and stylish ambience at the Equinox lounge
 3,000 sq. ft of flexible meeting space and a 24-hour business center
 The latest security systems, double gated entrance and exclusive facilities for ladies

APPLICATION OF THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

3.1 McKinsey 7S Model

3|Page
3.1.1 ORGANISATION STRUCTURE
Hilton’s organizational structure can be described as divisional. This is because Hilton’s C-suite is
responsible for managing a range of functional and geographic divisions, and because the business itself
divides its properties, and thus its operations, into three areas:

Ownership: Properties that are owned directly by Hilton.

Management and franchise: Properties managed Hilton or franchised to others.

Timeshare: Hilton timeshare (Grand Vacations) properties.

The first two divisions – ownership, management and franchise – fall under the leadership of Hilton Hotels
& Resorts while the third – timeshare – falls under Hilton Grand Vacations, which has been a wholly
separate entity since it was spun out of Hilton Hotels & Resorts a publicly traded company in 2008.

Spinning off Hilton’s timeshares into a separate company was part of CEO Christopher J. Nassetta’s
restructuring initiatives that were introduced shortly after he took over the business in 2007. Nassetta
introduced a range of changes at this time, including:

The gradual restructuring of senior management.

Improving communication between Hilton Hotels and individual business units.

Moving the company’s head office from Beverly Hills, CA to McLean, VA.

Enhancing organizational culture to promote unity and increase the speed of decision-making at all levels.

3.1.2 STRATEGY IMPLEMENTED
One of the more interesting content marketing successes since the start of COVID-19 also happens to be one
of the most delicious -- Hilton’s decision to release DoubleTree hotel’s famous chocolate chip cookie recipe.

If you’re not familiar, DoubleTree is one of Hilton Hotel’s sub-brands that focuses on warm and hospitable
service at older lodging facilities. One of the brand’s “surprise and delight” marketing experiences is to hand
out a complimentary warm, fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie to every guest at check-in.

This past April, with COVID-19 rearing its head and with most travel at a standstill, Hilton published this
once-secret recipe for stuck-at-home travelers to bake on their own. And they did so en masse, setting off a
frenzy of DoubleTree loyalists and at-home bakers on a mission to recreate a part of the travel experience
they missed.

What resulted was an earned media bonanza for the brand, helping to increase engagements, mentions,
shares, reposts, and recipe reviews from current customers and curious followers alike. Messages and photos
of the cookies lit up social media channels in the weeks following publication, with the brand being tagged
hundreds of times. Travel bloggers and forums also picked up the company’s press release, with hundreds of
their readers discussing the recipe within their respective comment sections.

Looking back, during a time when travel ground to a halt and Hilton’s content team may have had very little
in the way of unique content to publish, releasing the DoubleTree cookie recipe through their owned media
properties was a clever move.

Their content strategists identified a brand experience to highlight. Their content marketers saw an
opportunity to seize on the at-home baking frenzy brought on by COVID-19 and the wanderlust that we all
felt at that time. And by reminding travelers of a way they can relive a positive memory of their last
DoubleTree experience through this recipe, they were able to motivate disengaged customers and at-home
bakers to share photos of the cookies they baked using the #DoubleTreeCookie hashtag. In turn, building a
temporary community through positive engagement with the brand.

It is a move that continues to pay dividends for Hilton to this day, as mentions continue to pour in this
holiday season.

3.1.3 SYSTEMS AT DOUBLETREE BY HILTON HOTEL
DoubleTree by Hilton is an American hotel chain. It is part of Hilton Worldwide. Most DoubleTree hotels
are independently owned and operated by franchisees. In early 2011, Hilton Worldwide launched a logo and
name rebranding for the chain, replacing the name "Doubletree" with "DoubleTree by Hilton". DoubleTree
by Hilton Hotel Santiago-Vitacurais centrally located within developed commercial and financial district in
Santiago.

As the Five Star Alliance’s number, the hotel offers top-notch services for the customers and meanwhile it
needs five star security systems for its safety. With the demand for hotel rooms and space constantly
increasing, the hotel decides to upgrade its IP surveillances as to offering a better security ambience for its
customers, employers and property.

The hotel wants to upgrade its existing security system for higher quality images. Dahua IP solution offers a
highly reliable and cost effective method of hotel surveillance. Dahua HD network small IR dome cameras,
IPC-HDW4100S features 1.3-Megapixel progressive scan Aptina CMOS and supports up to max
25/30fps@1.3M&720P encoding. The maximum IR length is 20 meters. The IP cameras install across each
floor of the hotel to monitor doors and stairs of people entering and leaving. Dahua IP solution covers all
public spaces and circulation areas with total 200 units including all stairways, kitchens, car parks, leisure
facilities and laundry rooms, as well as the inner courtyards and the roof.

The key objective has always been to record activity captured by the cameras so that any incidents or
suspicious activity can be recorded and be used if appropriate. Dahua IP solution can help keep the guests
safe from theft and other criminals by helping track the visitors and prevent break-ins on hotel property.

The hotel also upgrades its old NVRs to Dahua NVR6000 series which is able to provide a higher resolution.
Dahua, 128channel super network video recorder, NVR6000 series supports HDMI and VGA output at up-to
1920x1080p resolution, which benefits users with high-definition video image viewing.

DoubleTree by Hilton understands that doing the little things well can mean everything. So does Dahua,
Dahua offers a comprehensive product portfolio for hotel surveillance system to help protect and give its
guests a peace of mind when they stay. A safe and secure environment is also fundamental in guest
expectations and vital in protecting a hotel’s brand.

3.1.5 LEADERSHIP STYLES
Hilton is a transformational leader who provide stimulation and individual examination. His key traits were
determination, visionary, risk taker, tenaciousness, dedication, energetic, caring, conscientiousness,
motivation, persistent, and ambitious.

Conrad's business faced troubles at first, incurring losses and running into debt. But with determination, he
trusted on his ability, started over again and bought his first hotel outside Texas in San Francisco. He then
set a goal to build a hotel every year.

Hilton's management style is that he believes that anyone in the organization can be a manager one day,
therefore he employs the laissez-faire management style. He hired capable managers and allowed them to
make important decisions regarding hotel policies. He also encourages and supports his staff to achieve the
goals of the hotel, which is to give excellent service for the guests staying in the hotel. He is a people-
oriented leader, who would personally ask his employees for their opinions about their work and the
company. This lets his people know that they are actually valued, appreciated, and not unseen.

His way of treating people fairly inspired others to follow suit, as they knew what kind of leader he was.
Hilton also empowered them to make the right decision for the hotel.

In regards to visionary and conscientiousness, he used good quality building materials that didn’t require
repair and maintenance, so as to build a good quality building and save a lot of future expenses on
maintenance.

Conrad Hilton was an innovator, first applying practices now used industry-wide in hotel management. For
example, he was one of the first hoteliers to use an inter-hotel reservation system and set the standard for the
mass-purchase of soap, matches and all hotel room items.

3.2 MICHAEL PORTER 5 FORCES MODEL

3.2.1 Threat of New Entrants:

The economies of scale is fairly difficult to achieve in the industry in which Hilton operates.
This makes it easier for those producing large capacitates to have a cost advantage. It also
makes production costlier for new entrants. This makes the threats of new entrants a weaker
force.

The product differentiation is strong within the industry, where firms in the industry sell
differentiated products rather a standardised product. Customers also look for differentiated
products. There is a strong emphasis on advertising and customer services as well. All of
these factors make the threat of new entrants a weak force within this industry.

The capital requirements within the industry are high, therefore, making it difficult for new
entrants to set up businesses as high expenditures need to be incurred. Capital expenditure is
also high because of high Research and Development costs. All of these factors make the
threat of new entrants a weaker force within this industry.

The access to distribution networks is easy for new entrants, which can easily set up their
distribution channels and come into the business. With only a few retail outlets selling the
product type, it is easy for any new entrant to get its product on the shelves. All of these
factors make the threat of new entrants a strong force within this industry.

3.2.2 Bargaining Power of Buyers:

Hilton Worldwide purchases from more than 4000 suppliers globally and the bargaining
power of most suppliers is low due to the lack of uniqueness of products and services
supplied. Moreover, the importance of order volume for Hilton suppliers is paramount and
there is no supplier switching costs for Hilton on most cases. Hilton runs Supplier Diversity
Program that ensures purchasing from, and the development of, socially diverse suppliers.
Accordingly, the program provides an additional competitive ground for socially diverse
suppliers compared to other supplier groups.

14 | P a g e
3.2.3 Threat of Substitute Products:
In hotel industry is not significant. Direct substitutes for staying in Hilton hotels includes
people staying in the homes of friends and relatives and people renting apartments for short
periods of time. However, arrangement of these options can be time-consuming and
associated with a great deal of hassle. Hotel industry is also faced with technology-fuelled
indirect substitution such as video conferencing, since this form of communication can
eliminate the need to travel to another place and stay in a hotel…

Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. Report contains a full version of Hilton Porter’s Five Forces
Analysis. The report also illustrates the application of the major analytical strategic
frameworks in business studies such as SWOT, PESTEL, Value Chain Analysis and
McKinsey 7S Model on Hilton. Moreover, the report contains analysis of Hilton’s marketing
strategy, discusses leadership and organizational structure and addresses the issues of
corporate social responsibility.

3.2.4 Bargaining Power of suppliers:

The number of suppliers in the industry in which Hilton operates is a lot compared to the
buyers. This means that the suppliers have less control over prices and this makes the
bargaining power of suppliers a weak force.

The product that these suppliers provide are fairly standardised, less differentiated and have
low switching costs. This makes it easier for buyers like Hilton to switch suppliers. This
makes the bargaining power of suppliers a weaker force.

The suppliers do not contend with other products within this industry. This means that there
are no other substitutes for the product other than the ones that the suppliers provide. This
makes the bargaining power of suppliers a stronger force within the industry.

The suppliers do not provide a credible threat for forward integration into the industry in
which Hilton operates. This makes the bargaining power of suppliers a weaker force within
the industry.

15 | P a g e
3.2.5 Rivalry among Existing Competitors:

Rivalry among existing firms in premium segment hotel industry is fierce. Hilton Hotels and
Resorts competes with Marriott, Sheraton, Hyatt Regency, Radisson Blu, Renaissance,
Westin, Sofitel and other premium segment hotel chains in the global marketplace. As a
result of massive investments into various aspects of the service provision during the past
few years, Hilton enjoyed greater income growths compared to the competition. Specifically,
as it is illustrated in Figure 2 below, Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. Net Income in the 1
quarter 2016 grew year on year by 106.67 %, faster than average growth of its competitors

The number of competitors in the industry in which Hilton operates are very few. Most of
these are also large in size. This means that firms in the industry will not make moves
without being unnoticed. This makes the rivalry among existing firms a weaker force within
the industry.

The very few competitors have a large market share. This means that these will engage in
competitive actions to gain position and become market leaders. This makes the rivalry
among existing firms a stronger force within the industry.

Conclusion
It was a complete useful experience working at the DoubleTree by Hilton. The friendly welcoming staff
and the space they have created for an intern allowed me with full opportunities to learn and know myself as
a worker. This experience brought out my strength and also the areas I needed to make up. It added more
confidence to my professional approach built a stronger positive attitude and taught me how to work in team
as a player. The primary objective of an internship of an internship is to gather a real-life working experience
and put their theoretical knowledge in practice. This was my first real life experience to work in the one of
the best companies. I was quite nervous about it. During my 8 weeks of internship, I have developed a lot of
confidence and courage in this industry.

My experience at the company was highly educative one. I went to Finance departments of the company and
got a lot of varied experience. In all these departments I get to learn many things which will be helpful for
me in my future.

I also learned the values and importance of these industry and as a human being, I noticed many changes in
my attitude. I am more confident and more likely to do any work now.

During my internship. I thoroughly enjoyed every single day. I learned that this is just the beginning of the
road I have to travel a long distance to be a successful person in this field. But I must say that this experience
will be proven objective in my career in the Service industry.
