Introduction

Fig. 1. Shows the slow-motion of a person jumping off the cliff of the falls

Dull presentations can be a hindrance to learning and information retention. That is

why presentation software is always available to download, install, and utilize. There are
lots of ways to present information. This can be done using outlines, images, smart
graphics, or even through motion. Succeedingly, these tools help people to provide
captivating and glamorous information for their audience.

Previously, we classified presentation software into two: desktop presentation

software and web presentation software. In this lesson, as well as for each
succeeding lesson, you will familiarize yourself with specific presentation software. This

1
Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

lesson focuses on the different techniques and tools that you can utilize to make a
presentation simple yet engaging one.

What do you think is the essence of learning specific presentation software, from classic
to complex? How would you utilize these to influence and engage people in your field of
specialization? How would the skills you acquired from this lesson helped you become a
more productive learner?

Objectives
In this lesson, you should be able to do the following:
● Label the parts of Google Slides.
● Outline the procedure of animating slides.
● Utilize slide animation properly.
● Understand the principles of designing, and adding animation and transition.

DepEd Competency

Use common productivity tools effectively by maximizing advanced application techniques.

Have you ever played charades? Charades is a game in which the chosen representative of
each opposing team will act a given word out, while the rest of their teammates will guess
the word. The team with the most guesses within the time limit will be declared the winner.

In this activity, you need to have 5 members in a group, and you will play charades with a
twist. Instead of acting out the word, the representative will spell the chosen word through
head movements, and the rest of the group will guess. Each member should take turns to
spell the word.

Guide Questions
1. What is the category of the game based on the words that you have guessed?

2. When playing charades with a twist, how did you know if the spelling of the word is
correct?

3
Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

3. How can you relate charades to movements or motion? How did the movements help
you and your team guess the words?

Familiarizing with Google Slides

Google Slides refers to a cloud-based platform that enables you to build presentations from
the Web. It is a part of the Google Suite package and has a simple environment that allows
you to manage easily. Available templates are limited, but these can be customized.

Have you tried using Google Slides before? How

was it?

Different Parts of Google Slides

You might be wondering how hard it is to work in an unfamiliar platform since people
commonly use desktop applications. However, you just need to familiarize yourself with its
environment and its parts. Google Slides is easy to learn because it has fewer commands
than other platforms.

The Title bar is at the top-left corner of the platform. It holds the file name of the
presentation. To change the file name, click on the title bar to change the default file name.

The Menu tab contains a set of platform menus. It includes the File, Edit, View, Insert,
Format, Slide, Arrange, Tools, Add-ons, and Help menus.

Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

The Toolbar contains different tools that you can use to insert images, shapes, or lines and
to format the slide's content. It has the same components as the Insert and Format tabs.

Comment, Present, and Share buttons are at the top-right corner of the platform. They can
be found along with the account icon in which you can see the default picture of your
account. Under the account icon, you can find the side panel that is part of all platforms in
the Google Suite package.

The Workspace is the biggest among all the parts of the platform. This part enables you to
edit your presentation and insert data. You can format designs and text, and insert other
graphics essential to your presentation.

6
Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

The Slides pane refers to the part where you can see the number and order of slides. You
can add slides by selecting the last slide and pressing enter on the keyboard. Different views
are also available in the slides pane: filmstrip view and grid view.

The Comments pane is a part of the Google Slides platform that enables the presenter to
leave comments on the specific slide. It shows other information that might help the
presenter to discuss the contents of the slide. It is like a cue card that indicates some script
that the audience cannot see.

7
Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

Are the parts similar to other presentation

software you have tried before? What are the
similarities?

Adding Animation with Google Slides

Animation refers to the simulated motion or visual effects applied to elements such as text,
image, illustration, and others. This also applies to Google Slides. It enables you to add
animation and transition to texts, images, illustrations, graphics, and anything else. There
are several procedures when adding animation to elements and slides.

How do we make the presentation more

engaging? How do we add animation from the
slides and contents?

Steps in Adding Element Animation

1. Highlight the elements on the slide you want to animate.
2. Go to the Menu tab and click Insert.
3. Choose Animation, and the motion side panel will show.
4. Choose the desired animation for the element.

Steps in Adding Slide Animation

1. In the Toolbar, click Transition.

2. A motion side panel will appear.
3. Choose the desired transition for the slide.
4. You may apply it to all slides if you want a uniform transition.

8
Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

Note
Animation varies in different presentation software. The procedures
are the same, but these can be found in different menus. Some
platforms have an animation menu to change animations easily,
while some have longer methods for accessing animation.

Principles of Design
Adding animation is a part of designing presentations. It gives the presentation more
effective impact; however, without learning the proper way of designing, presentations will
look crowded and cluttered. Just as artists follow their own set of principles, presenters
must also follow design principles that will lead to better presentations. The following are
the four basic principles of design:

1. Balance is the distribution of the design elements in a presentation. There are two
types of balance: symmetrical and asymmetrical. Symmetrical balance is the
perfect similarity or evenness of design when applied to a slide, while asymmetrical
balance is the even application of different or uneven arrangements in designs.

2. Emphasis is the highlighting of elements. Ways of emphasizing ideas in a slide

presentation include using boldface fonts, italicizing texts, putting underlines, and
placing relevant images. Moreover, adding animation and transitions stresses the
meaning of the text in the presentations.

3. Unity refers to the oneness of the elements in the presentation to communicate

ideas correctly. It focuses on adding more effects that bring the audience to the
objective of the presenter.

4. Movement is the act of changing position, also known as motion. Animation and
transitions are motions that enable the presentation to become dynamic and
interactive.

9
Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

To sum up, when applying an animation, you need to follow certain principles when adding
animation and transition to each slide. As an example, whenever you add slide-up
animation to a text, you are also using it on the rest of the similar elements. Hence,
whenever you apply asymmetrical animation, you are evenly adding different animations
and transitions.

What other design principles can you think of for

better slide design and presentation?

Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

Guide
You may refer to the sample answer below. Note that this is just a sample that is not
as complete as the answers you should provide.

Explanation

I click the Edit tab from the menu bar and choose the image menu from there. I
add animations and transitions from it as well.

Evaluate

A. Answer the following completely in your own words.

1. To which part of Google Slides will you go if you want to see how many slides are
there in the presentation?

2. Where can you find the animation menu to add animation to an element?

3. How will you add transitions to a slide?

12
Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

4. How will you add animation to a text?

5. If you want to share your slide with somebody, which part of Google Slides are you
going to click?

B. Answer the following comprehensively.

1. While you are exploring Google Slides, you accidentally clicked something and
unintentionally changed the transition of all the slides. How are you going to change
it back to the original transition pattern?

13
Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

2. Where can you add and apply animation to your presentation?

3. How will you know if the animation is applied to the presentation element?

4. How will you know if the transition is applied to the presentation slide?

14
Unit 5.2: Adding Animation

5. It has been said that the simpler the presentation, the more elegant it is. What is your
position on this? Justify your answer.
