You are going to read about food from a slow trip around Norway. Match the following paragraph
titles to the article on page six. Two of the titles are not needed.
VISITING NORWAY
A. Slow travel is a concept that is not talked about as much as it should be, but it shares many
similarities with its more popular cousins, slow living and slow food. It is a perfectly simple concept, slowing down
when you are in a new place, taking time to immerse yourself in your surroundings and keeping your mind open
for new experiences are just some of its philosophical concepts.
B. Norway offers itself up as the perfect location to sample some slow travel. A country that boasts
a multitude of places in which you can just sit back and take it all in, from the unbelievable fjords to the clearest
blue lakes and the most laid-back cities where the locals just like to chill.
C. As we are meant to be moving slowly, perhaps starting in the past is the best way to go.
The Vikings are synonymous with Norway and they ruled the country for over 300 years from 750-1100 AD.
Predictably depicted as savage warriors, they were often quite the opposite with their lives being peaceful and
organised. They instigated the world’s first parliament and even had a well-established legal system.
D. One of the best places to brush up on your Viking history is Aveldsnes on the island of Bukkoya.
This location was where the first king of Norway (yes, he was a Viking), Harold Fairhair sat during what many call
"the golden age of the Vikings". On the island you can also visit a 10th century Viking farm where the speed of
life really slows down.
E. If you would like to see how the residents of a more modern Norwegian village live, then why
not take a leisurely walk around the picturesque village of Flam. Flam is located in the Aurlandsfjord and can be
reached via the Flam railway, which was once described as the most beautiful train journey in the world. The
last leg of the railway is just 20km long but took more than 20 years to build due to the stunning but unforgiving
terrain. Whilst relaxing in a vintage train carriage, passengers will pass through over 18 manmade tunnels while
taking in a plethora of spectacular views.
F. Despite what you might think, it is still possible to practise slow travel in the capital, Oslo. Being
the biggest city in Norway is not actually a drawback as the capital is surrounded by forest which can be easily
reached via public transport in less than half an hour.
G. If the forests aren’t for you then why not stay within the city limits and take a trip to Frogner
Park, the world’s largest sculpture park. Originally part of Frogner Manor, the sculptures were put in place between
1924 and 1943 and there are certainly a lot of them to enjoy. 212 sculptures in total are currently situated in the
park so it is more than suitable for a lazy afternoon stroll.
H. So, you are looking for the best way to top off your trip to Norway, then how about a soothing
sauna? Urban sauna culture has become increasingly popular in the Norwegian capital and fjordside saunas offer
stress-free relaxation for up to 10 people all at the very heart of the city. It doesn’t get much slower than a daytime
nap in a toasty, wood fired sauna and it could put a rubber stamp on your slow journey around this Scandinavian
wonderland.
VISITING NORWAY
7 Talking points
