Sign language
The terms ‘British Sign Language’ and ‘BSL’ were introduced in
1975 when research into the linguistics of BSL began. The sign
language is a way of communicating by using the hands and other
parts of the body.
Sign languages are an important way for deaf people to
communicate. Deaf people often use them instead of spoken
languages.
Sign languages are not universal. That means there is not one
single sign language for all deaf people around the world. There
are many different sign languages. Each deaf community can
develop its own sign language. Usually there is a different sign
language in each country. Linguists have identified at least 137
different sign languages. A sign language is not a copy of a
spoken language. For example, American Sign Language (ASL)
and British Sign Language (BSL) are not copies of English. They
are different from each other.
