Comma
In some cases, a comma is not used before the last item within a series of three
or more words or phrases before the coordinating conjunctions. However, a
majority of style guides in English prefer using a serial comma (also called the
Oxford comma) to match the speaking cadence of sentences and to be
consistent with other means of separating items in a list, especially to avoid
confusion when the coordinating conjunction and is used as part of an item in
the list.

Example: The topics discussed by Ms. Valeriano are botany, anatomy,

physiology, and Earth and natural science.
20

Semicolon
A semicolon signals a break within a sentence. It is stronger than a comma but
less than a full stop like a period. In sentences that use several commas, the
semicolon is useful to enable readers identify the break or division of items in a
list already used with a comma.

Examples: The schools invited to represent Metro Manila for the annual parade
are St. John the Baptist, Manila; Jose Rizal High School, Pasay; and St. Mary's
Academy, Quezon City.
I danced like a monkey in class yesterday; it was embarrassing.
