OSINT Sources
• OSINT is distinguished from research in that it applies the process of intelligence to create tailored
knowledge supportive of a specific decision by a specific individual or group. [3]
1. Media:, print newspapers, magazines, radio, and television from across and between countries.
2. Internet, online publications, blogs, discussion groups, citizen media (i.e. – cell phone videos,
and user created content), YouTube, and other social media websites (i.e. –
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.). This source also outpaces a variety of other sources due to
its timeliness and is easily accessible.
3. Public Government Data, public government reports, budgets, hearings, telephone directories,
press conferences, websites, and speeches. Although this source comes from an official source
they are publicly accessible and may be used openly and freely.
4. Professional and Academic Publications, information acquired from journals, conferences,
symposia, academic papers, dissertations, and theses.
5. Commercial Data, commercial imagery, financial and industrial assessments, and databases.
6. Grey Literature, technical reports, preprints, patents, working papers, business documents,
unpublished works, dissertations, and newsletters.

Fake or Predatory Scientific Journals

• How can you spot a predatory journal?
• It can be hard, even for experts. But there
are red flags:
• - Bad web design, spelling and grammar
errors, grainy headshots and warped
images
• - Asks for submissions by email
• - Offers quick publication, often in a month
or less
• - Advertises to authors more than readers
• - Charges less than $150 US for open-
access publishing
• - Nearly identical name or logo to famous
journals

Correction of Misinformation –
Harder than it looks
• Based on the findings of 2017 study in the journal Psychological
Science, the most effective ways to reduce misinformation
through corrections is by:[16]
• limiting detailed descriptions of or arguments in favor of the
misinformation;
• walking through the reasons why a piece of misinformation is false
rather than just labelling it false;
• presenting new and credible information which allows readers to
update their knowledge of events and understand why they developed
an inaccurate understanding in the first place;
• using video, as videos appear to be more effective than text at
increasing attention and reducing confusion, making videos more
effective at correcting misperception than text.
