Filtration
Why?
Good hydraulic filtration is gaining more and more
importance in the use of hydraulic systems.

Origin of Contamination
The main cause of failures and downtime is dirt in the
hydraulic system.
Failure analysis indicate that 80% of the failures are
caused by faults in the hydraulic system.
90% of them are caused by impurities in the hydraulic oil.

EDITOR’S COMMENT

IT – stay protected
Using some kind of computer technology has become de rigueur for many people in business
and industry today. Indeed, it is now playing a critical role within digital transformation; the
world of Industry 4.0, the Industrial Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence et al. However, as
we become more reliant and dependent on IT, along comes the dark side – the risk of cyber-
crime. And things are looking pretty grim in this regard. According to a new report published
by Make UK more than half of manufacturers have been the victim of cyber-crime, and a third
Ed Holden of those have suffered some financial loss or disruption to business as a result.
Editor The manufacturing sector is the fifth most targeted for attack in 2019, behind government
systems and finance. Yet, the report points out that manufacturing – which has 2.6 million
employees, provides 10 per cent of UK output and 70% of business research and development –
remains among the least protected sector against cyber-crime in Britain.
The report, ‘Cyber-Security and Manufacturing – A Briefing for Manufacturers by Make UK’,
casts a light on the full extent of the threat across the sector from loss of data, theft of capital
and intellectual property along with disruption to business and catastrophic impact on the
trading reputation of a business. Alarmingly, all expert opinion points to the fact that many
more attacks will have gone undetected, with businesses woefully prepared to protect
themselves against this ever-growing threat or to detect a breach after the event.
Cyber threat is increasingly a business-critical issue, with 41% of manufacturers reporting
that they have already been asked by a customer to demonstrate or guarantee the robustness of
their cyber security processes. Yet, when asked if they would be able to do this successfully,
31% of businesses said they would be unable to give those guarantees of cyber safety if asked.
Investment in the latest digital technologies is also being hampered, with many companies
“As we become more reliant holding back from implementing the latest innovations for fear of increased exposure to cyber-
attack. Some 35% of businesses admitted they are currently not fully investing in new digital
and dependent on IT, along processes even when not doing so will leave them unable to compete in an ever-changing and
comes the dark side – the developing global marketplace.
Stephen Phipson, CEO of Make UK, the manufacturers’ organisation, reflects that digitisation
risk of cyber-crime.” is revolutionising modern manufacturing and no facet of our sector will be untouched. “The
rewards are obvious,” he said, “technological leaps in the design, development, fabrication and
operation of the goods and services the UK makes. But the cyber security threat to
manufacturers is growing and evolving with it.”
Phipson also made the point that no business can afford to ignore this issue any longer and
too many are still burying their heads in the sand. “This is a strategic threat; failing to get this
right as a nation could cost the UK economy billions of pounds and put thousands of jobs at
risk,” he remarked. “Make UK recognises the vital role we can play in supporting
manufacturers in the face of this challenge. That is why we are partnering with leading cyber
security experts Vauban Group to make sure we are able to help our members with the latest
protective technologies and support to deliver new cyber security services that will help
manufacturers mitigate against current and future threats.”
Mitch Scherr, CEO of Vauban Group, added: “As manufactures continue to innovate and
invest in new technologies, there has never been a greater need for more effective cyber
defences to mitigate against the increasingly sophisticated cyber threats we’re seeing today.
“Make UK continues to lead the way for manufacturing in the UK and we’re pleased to be
working closely with them, delivering services and solutions that meet both the business and
cyber security needs of all manufacturers, including SMEs, ultimately improving the resilience
of the UK’s manufacturing industry in these uncertain times.”
Earlier this year, a cyber-attack brought a Norwegian aluminium producer to a standstill. The
incident occurred in March when one of the world’s largest aluminium producer NC Hydro was
forced to switch to manual operation when their digital systems were infiltrated and they
became subject to a severe ransomware attack. In the end, they had to halt production
completely while the virus was isolated. Nuff said. Stay protected out there.

IMechE responds to HS2 Review

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has welcomed the developments. Unfortunately, this new review fails to offer a
recently released independent review into the HS2 programme chance to consider the business benefits of constructing HS2,
but identifies some key areas that are missing. such as bringing innovative new trains to our railways, which

key aspects of the HS2 programme.
“For example, the terms do not include a requirement to
consider the cost of alternatives to provide the step-change
increase in rail capacity that is needed on long distance and
suburban services north of London. As an example, the review
requires an assessment of the cost of disruption to rail users
during HS2’s construction but does not consider the far greater
disruption of any alternative project to improve capacity on the
existing railway.”

Opportunity
Dr Baxter continued: “This review may provide an
opportunity to investigate different ways that a high-speed rail
link can be delivered with minimal environmental impacts,
particularly in the area of modal transfer. It may also find
solutions to elements of the scheme that will lower costs, for
example by reducing the size of stations or delaying sections
of the route.
“We would encourage consideration of existing network
readiness as part of this review, as the ability to deliver
passengers to HS2’s origin and terminus stations is critical to its
success. Without investment in the existing railway and other
transport modes, the full potential of HS2 will never be realised.
“Britain has a long and proud history of rail transport and it

with many rodless cylinders.
Camozzi Automation is addressing this potential problem by
expanding its UK-based cylinder service to include Series 52
rodless cylinders in standard and slide bearing versions
This service development means that replacement rodless
cylinders can be supplied faster than ever before and potential
production line downtime minimised as a result.

Continual investment
Camozzi Automation managing director Adrian Farnham said:
“We are continually investing in our infrastructure; not only to
meet customer expectations, but to surpass them. The expansion
of our cylinder service is living proof of our philosophy of
continuous improvement.”
Series 52 builds on all the benefits associated with rodless
cylinders; being particularly suitable for long stoke applications
as there’s no bending of the piston rod and in applications
where space is at a premium. Available as double-acting,
magnetic or cushioned, all versions are available with either
standard or short carriage, thereby catering for a wider range of
applications.

OPTIONS into Technology event
Global engineering technologies company, Renishaw, ran two workshops at
a Girls into Technology event held at SGS Berkeley Green UTC, a university
technical college in Gloucestershire, UK recently.
Hosted collaboratively by several employer partners, the event showcased
the technology industry to girls aged 12 to 14 and outlined the large variety
of careers available in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
Alongside Renishaw, the event was supported by Atkins, Airbus,
Cybersecurity Associates, Deloitte and GE Aviation. The attendees, who
were from Gloucestershire schools, took part in workshops hosted by the
employers, to get a feel for engineering and technology.
Renishaw’s workshops began with a presentation which introduced the
company and included a video where some of its female employees spoke
about their career experiences. Some of the company’s STEM ambassadors
also ran a mini science show which incorporated several exhibits around
magnetics and then finished off the workshop by conducting a hands-on
engineering activity.
One of Renishaw’s female development engineers, Rosie Broxton, also
gave a talk on her own journey into engineering: “Young people often feel
under pressure to know exactly what they want to do when they are older,”
she said. “During my talk, I shared my engineering journey with the girls
because it is reassuring for them to hear from someone they can relate to.
Broxton continued: “It is important that young people have role models

Staff at the RAF Museum approached Thorite because of

educational area. Fun ‘n’ Flight houses several fascinating displays
which are mainly aimed at a younger audience which demonstrates
the technology involved in aircraft design & flight.
The most popular display by far is the Lockheed C-130 Hercules
military transport plane, where this scale model simulates a parcel
drop into a given target area, which is great at developing teamwork
for younger visitors, as it is almost as if they were a real-life aircrew.
The display was first installed in 1997 and a normal day will see
the C-130 fly anything up to one hundred ‘sorties’ and it will do this
seven days a week. During air shows or other events, this can easily
increase to two hundred ‘sorties’. Museum staff have calculated that
the model has now flown the distance to Afghanistan & halfway
back.
Unsurprisingly, after so many flights, reliability issues had
surfaced. Museum staff contacted a local specialist who was unable
to resolve the problems. This was when Thorite was approached for
help.
Thorite’s pneumatic applications manager, Mik Rhodes visited the
museum and immediately isolated the problem to the control panel. FEATURES

COMPRESSED AIR

Pushing the boundaries

of compressor efficiency
Intercooling is a common practice in compressor technology for reducing the power required for
operation. However, the latest research by Mattei, in conjunction with the Polytechnic University
of Milan, shows that the similar concept of ‘intracooling’ achieves even better results in
two-stage compressors. Andy Jones, managing director at Mattei, explains how it works,
improves energy efficiency, and what’s in store for further development.
