What Is AI: Foundations, History and State of the Art of AI

AI, or artificial intelligence, refers to the simulation of human intelligence

in machines that are programmed to think and learn like humans. The field of AI
research began in the 1950s, but it has seen significant growth and advancement
in recent years due to advancements in technology and an increase in data
availability.

The foundations of AI include concepts from computer science, psychology, and

philosophy, as well as techniques from fields such as mathematics, linguistics,
and engineering. Some of the key techniques used in AI include machine learning,
natural language processing, and computer vision.

The history of AI can be divided into several eras, including the "GOFAI" era in
the 1950s and 60s, the "expert systems" era in the 1970s and 80s, and the
"machine learning" era that began in the 1990s and continues to the present day.
The state of the art in AI is constantly evolving, with new developments and
breakthroughs happening regularly. Some of the current areas of active
research include deep learning, reinforcement learning, and generative
models. These methods are being used in a variety of applications, including
self-driving cars, personal assistants, and image and speech recognition.
Additionally, there is a growing interest in explainable AI (XAI) which aims
to make AI systems more transparent and understandable to humans.
