INTELLIGENCE ?
Artificial
intelligence
ARTIFICIAL
“Artificial intelligence is a branch of
computer science dealing with the simulation
of intelligent behavior in computers.”
When a machine can make intelligent decisions,

INTELLIGENCE
it can be referred to as being intelligent-
artificially. We mostly see people using the

ARTIFICIAL
terms of machine learning, deep learning, and
AI synonymously. However, deep learning is a
subset of machine learning, and machine
learning is a subset of AI.

He is widely recognized as the father of
Artificial Intelligence due to his astounding
contribution in the field of Computer Science
and AI.

History
1956 - John McCarthy coined the term ‘artificial intelligence’ and had the first AI
conference.

ARTIFI
1969 - Shakey was the first general-purpose mobile robot built. It is now able to do things
with a purpose vs. just a list of instructions.
1997 - Supercomputer ‘Deep Blue’ was designed, and it defeated the world champion chess
player in a match. It was a massive milestone by IBM to create this large computer.
2002 - The first commercially successful robotic vacuum cleaner was created.

CIAL
2005 - 2019 - Today, we have speech recognition, robotic process automation (RPA), a
dancing robot, smart homes, and other innovations make their debut.
2020 - Baidu releases the LinearFold AI algorithm to medical and scientific and medical
teams developing a vaccine during the early stages of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)

INTELL
pandemic. The algorithm can predict the RNA sequence of the virus in only 27 seconds,
which is 120 times faster than other methods.
Timeline of artificial intelligence

Evolution of artificial
intelligence
In 1947, Alan Turing, the father of Computer Science, remarked, "I believe that at the end of the century,
the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of
machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted." And it would not be a stretch to say that he was
right. Such is the nature of discovery, of the hitherto considered unknown becoming the norm, of the old

ARTIFICIAL
making way for the new that it is almost unfathomable to begin with.

While the notion of thinking machines dates back to centuries, albeit in folklore and anecdotes, the
coinage of the term AI can be traced back to the 1950s. In the almost seven decades since, Artificial
Intelligence technology has developed and evolved in several ways, as have its applications.

INTELLIGENCE
ARTIFICIAL
The period between the 1950s and the 1970s in the history of AI revolved around the research on neural
networks; the ensuing three decades (1980s to 2010s) were the dawn of the applications of Machine
Learning. With consistent research, an ever-rising degree of intrigue, and widespread application,
Machine Learning has made way for the subtler concept of Deep Learning. And the leap into the

(AI)
unknown that characterized the initial research in AI has become more of a leap of faith, with new

INTELLIGENCE
chapters unfolding every year.

Evolution of artificial
intelligence in india
In India’s case, the first program on AI in India was conducted as early as the
1960s by Professor H.N. Mahabala at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT ),
Kanpur. However, research in AI took off in 1986 when the Government of

ARTIFICIAL
India launched the Knowledge-Based Computing Systems (KBCS) program in
conjunction with the United Nations Development Program as part of its
Indian Fifth Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) research programme.
Indian scientists have undertaken several projects since then, such as the

INTELLIGENCE

project on Machine Translation for Indian Languages by IIT Kanpur; Optical
Character Recognition project by ISI Kolkata; flight-scheduling expert system,
Sarani, developed by CDAC, Mumbai; a speech synthesis system developed
for Indian railways by TIFR; an image-processing facility developed by IISc

The impact of artificial
intelligence
On society

ARTIFICIAL
Artificial intelligence’s impact on society is widely debated.
Many argue that AI improves the quality of everyday life by
doing routine and even complicated tasks better than humans

INTELLIGENCE
can, making life simpler, safer, and more efficient. Others

ARTIFICIAL
argue that AI poses dangerous privacy risks, exacerbates
racism by standardizing people, and costs workers their jobs,
leading to greater unemployment.

AI in Different Industries

ARTIFICIAL
Artificial intelligence (AI) may help you enhance the value of your company in a variety of ways. It
may help you optimize your operations, increase total revenue, and focus your staff on more
essential duties if applied correctly. As a result, AI is being utilized in a variety of industries
throughout the world, including health care, finance, manufacturing, and others.

How ai is threat
to humanity
IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE A THREAT?
The tech community has long-debated the threats posed by artificial intelligence. Automation of
jobs, the spread of fake news and a dangerous arms race of AI-powered weaponry have been

ARTIFICIAL
proposed as a few of the biggest dangers posed by AI.

Destructive super intelligence — aka artificial general intelligence that’s created by humans

and escapes our control to wreak havoc — is in a category of its own. It’s also something that
might or might not come to fruition (theories vary), so at this point it’s less risk than

INTELLIGENCE
hypothetical threat — and ever-looming source of existential dread.

ARTIFICIAL
Here are some of the ways artificial intelligence poses a serious risk:
1. Job automation
2. Privacy, security and the rise of 'deepfakes'

(AI)
3. Ai bias and widening socioeconomic inequality

INTELLIGENCE
4. Autonomous weapons and a potential ai arms race

Today’s Ai research
ARTIFICIAL
In today’s day, AI research is constant and continues to grow. Over

INTELLIGENCE
the last five years AI research has grown by 12.9% annually

ARTIFICIAL
worldwide, according to technology writer Alice Bonasio.
Within the next four years China is predicted to become the biggest
global source of artificial intelligence, taking over the United States’

(AI)
INTELLIGENCE
second lead in 2004 — and it is quickly closing in on Europe’s

ARTIFICIAL
number one spot.
Europe is the largest and most diverse region with high levels on
international collaboration within the field of artificial intelligence

research. After China and the United States, India is the third largest

INTELLIGENCE
country in terms of AI research output.

effects of ai
in Present
Artificial intelligence is being used for so many things and holds so much potential that
it's difficult to envisage our commercial future without it. From workflow management
systems to trend forecasting and even the way businesses buy advertisements, artificial
intelligence technologies are boosting efficiency like never before. Artificial intelligence

ARTIFICIAL
can gather and organise massive amounts of data in order to make inferences and
estimates that humans are incapable of comprehending manually. It also enhances
organisational efficiency while minimising the likelihood of a mistake, and it detects
anomalous patterns, such as spam and fraud, in real time to inform enterprises about

INTELLIGENCE
questionable conduct.

ARTIFICIAL
AI has evolved in importance and sophistication to the point that a Japanese investment
business was the first to propose an AI Board Member for its capacity to foresee market
trends faster than humans. Artificial intelligence will be and is already being employed in
many sectors of life, such as self-driving cars in the coming years, more accurate weather

(AI)
forecasts, and earlier health diagnoses, to name a few.

A SMARTER
FUTURE
It has been said that we are on the cusp of the Fourth Industrial Revolution — a revolution
that is completely different than the previous three. From steam and water power, electricity
and assembly lines, and computerization to now challenging the ideas about what it means
to be human.

Smarter technologies in our factories and workplaces and connected machines that will
interact, visualize the entire production chain and make decisions autonomously is just a
couple of the ways that the Industrial Revolution will cause advancements in business. One
of the greatest promises that the Fourth Industrial Revolution brings is the potential to
improve the quality of life for the world’s population and raise income levels. Our
workplaces and organizations are becoming “smarter” and more efficient as machines,
humans are starting to work together, and we use connected devices to enhance our supply
chains and warehouses.
Like any of the defining technologies of the fourth
industrial revolution, artificial intelligence brings with it
AR
IFIC
tremendous opportunity, but also risk. In 20 years, there is a
chance that AI will entrench inequity-but right now is the
moment we can change that.

IAL
In the next 20 years, in the social good space, we’ll see AI
as a critical tool to bring to life and deeply connect what we
call the Ecosystem of Good-people, organizations and
communities working toward social impact in a

INT
collaborative way that enhances the effect of their efforts,
so we can do more good, faster, better and more
effectively.”
