The rise of ecological concern in the 90s with Rafael Moneo

In the early 1990s, environmentalism saw a boom in terms of public awareness and concern. The issue of
climate change was gaining traction, and with it came a heightened awareness of ecological issues. This was
especially notable in the architecture world as several architects were committed to the use of sustainable
materials and progressive design in their project. Three of these architects include Rafael Moneo, Moshe
Safdie and Shigeru Ban. All three architects have made significant contributions to the growing body of eco-
conscious work, and each other has come to embody a particular perspective on the concept of
sustainability in architecture.

Rafael Moneo - A visionary Architect who is deeply passionate about sustainability and conservation. One of
the most influential and important architects of the 20th century built a career on his passion for
conservation and sustainable living. His work places a special emphasis on sensibility to the environment and
the communities that surround his buildings. Throughout his career, Rafael Moneo has captioned the
importance of preserving natural sites, and working in harmony with the natural elements within and
surrounding the site to create buildings that are both beautiful and harmonious with their environment. He
was e leading proponent of "green" architecture and strongly believed in the power of architecture to act as a
tool to educate and inspire people to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle.

Moshe Safdie -An architect who emphasizes the importance of using natural materials like wood and stone
in his works. He also incorporates technologies into his design to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and
conserve energy.

In addition to his focus on green building techniques, he places a strong emphasis on the relationship
between a building and its surrounding environment. He views the design process as a collaboration with the
natural landscape of the site and aims to incorporate aspects between interior and exterior spaces to create
a cohesive whole. Moshe is an architect whose work focuses on creating environmentally sensitive buildings
that incorporate both traditional and innovative construction techniques.

Shigeru Ban-An architect who has designesd many iconic structure around the world are enviromentally
friendly and unique designs. His most notable structures are translucent structures made with cardboard
tubes. The 90s were a time of great ecological concern. The Earth was in a lot of trouble, and people were
starting to realize just how important it was to protect our environment. One of the biggest concerns was
global warming. As the Earth gets warmer and warmer, many plants and animals are not able to survive the
changes happening to their environment. There are many causes of global warming, including increasing
missions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. But one of the biggest causes of global warming is
deforestation. Trees help absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their roots, branches,
and leaves. When forests are cut down to make room for new crops or building projects, the stored carbon is
released back into the atmosphere and causes an increase in global temperatures. Another major concern
for environmentalists in the 1990s was pollution. As the human population increases, more cars, factories,
and other businesses are being built to meet the demand. This releases toxins into the air we breathe, which
can have serious health consequences. These problems are sometimes referred to as “environmental issues”
because people are harming the environment around them. So, what can be done about it? The answer is to
promote environmental awareness. Environmental awareness means being knowledgeable about
environmental issues and understanding their impacts.

Learning about these issues is a great way to encourage others to act and promote positive change for the
environment. There are many ways that you can promote environmental awareness. For example, you could
host an Earth Day celebration at your school to encourage your students to think about ways to reduce their
own impact on the environment. Or you could set up a booth at a local festival to educate the public about
the dangers of deforestation and air pollution. If all of us do a little bit to reduce our impact on the
environment, we can make a huge impact! The 90s were a time where environmental awareness was high,
and it was widely acknowledged as a crucial social issue that had to be addressed urgently by governments
around the world.

However, while international treaties were signed and international initiatives were launched to address the
various environmental problems that face the planet today, there is still no global consensus on what the
most effective solutions are nor are there any effective mechanisms that ensure that these solutions are
implemented at the scale that is needed to truly address the problems on a global scale. To achieve this in
the future we need to focus on educating and empowering local populations so that they can take the lead
and implement locally driven solutions that work for their own communities while also contributing to a more
inclusive and sustainable global society.

According to Wikipedia, pollution is defined as "the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment
that cause adverse change." This definition is particularly broad as it covers all types of chemical and
biological pollutants as well as mechanical pollutants such as industrial waste and noise from factories and
construction sites. It does not include natural forms of pollution that occur because of volcanic eruptions,
earthquakes or extreme weather phenomena such as hurricanes or floods. Pollution is serious

There are four main sources of pollution in the environment: natural, agricultural, industrial, and domestic.
Most pollution is caused by human activities but certain activities can also result in natural

pollution, for example volcanic eruption. There are different sources of natural pollution such as natural
disasters, soil erosion and groundwater runoff. Agricultural pollution occurs because farmers are using
pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals on their crops.

Rafael Moneo´s continuity and merging with the landscape has been a breaking innovation for the
renovation of this park which is strategically located in one of the main arteries of the city towards
Casablanca.

The garden is inspired by the Islamic gardens in Spain and Morocco with a labyrinth, oases and a circuit that
distributes water to fountains in the garden. A redesign of the rehabilitation of the area surrounding the
square in the historical center, under the direction of the architect Miguel Rosado, was accompanied by the
planting new trees.

The construction of the new City Hall in Plaza de la Constitution had as a main task the remodeling and
renewal of a part of the historic city Centre. Among the intervention undertaken was the erection of apublic
bollard with stone supports to protect the building from vehicle impact,as well as the paving of the road and
the replacement of the facades of the surrounding buildings. In the square which belongs to the same group
of buildings there are some modern benches as the outcome of a contest where the p ublic was invited to
propose ideas for the improvement. The area of the new square between Av. Edificio del Estado and Calle Dr
Julián Menéndez has benefited from renovation work consisting in introducing new materials and occultation
on part of the pavement to provide a pleasant rest area and at the same time preserve the exiting original
materials in situ, thereby linking this are with the neighboring blocks. The area received a new surface paved
with a material capable of absorbing noise and light, which better protect the vegetation that has grown
spontaneously under the old tiles. The new pavements will be lighted at night by LED lamps.

To complete the project, two more 'green' spaces have been introduced-on the south-west side of the
square-as an extension of the space in front in the City Hall towards the Cruz de Piedra and the east of the
Calle Menendez which will make it possible to improve the connection to the rest of the area, improving the
possibilities for the walking in the area and encourage the use of the area as a space for recreation and rest
for both locals and tourists.

Plaza de la Contitucion_the new town hall was built in 2012 following the demolition of the old town hall
that had stood on the site since 1930s. It served as the headquarters of the Municipality of Santa Cruz de
La Palma until the present one was built, which currently serves as the administrative headquarters of the
city. The building includes a reception area for citizens, municipal offices conference rooms as well as a cafe-
restaurant with outdoor terraces that open onto central plaza. Apart from proving the needed infrastructure
to house public offices, the building also offers new public space for citizens and visitors. Furthermore, it is
part of the strategy of urban renewal that seeks to connect the new city hall with the existing context
creating an attractive district in the heart of the city center that is home to many important cultural and
tourist attractions such as the Real Museo Canario (Canarian Art Museum) or the Castillo de la Cruz de
Piedra (Castle of the Stone Cross).

Plaza de la Constitución was built as the new Town Hall of Santa Cruz de La Palma following its demolition
in the 1970s. It served as thee headquarters of the municipality of Santa Cruz de la Palma until the present
one was built. This building has a reception hall where citizens can request documentation or services, a
cafeteria with terrace and rooms for the Municipality offices, as well as a parking lot on the basement.

The ecological concern now governs the management of our natural environement and conservation has
become a key issue in society in general and a recognized priority for policy makers, who have begun to
realize they must protect and preserve nature in all its manifestations for future generations
